Canon General / Re: Patents: Canon 55-110 f/2 Optical Formula
« on: January 19, 2012, 11:41:51 PM »
Could that be a hint to the 7DII being APS-C and not APS-H?

Think that hint came when they killed off APS-H with the 1DMk4 (Ok yes you can still buy it but it is very limited) when they went to the 1D-X.

im not sure if you read through the note: it is an EF-S lens... wouldnt it kill what you're thinking?

Not if your shooting video on a 60D or 7D (or T2i etc)

If the lens is smaller than the 24-70 and 24-105 it could be a nice middle ground walking video lens.

Even if it was the same size as the 24-70 or 24-105, that would be more than enough for me.

Yeah i kinda meant smaller as in internal mechanism not external when zoomed.

But if the IQ is there it will save a fortune for indi film makers not having to buy a whole set of basic primes (12, 24, 35, 50, 85, 100).

Would indoor sports be the target market with such a lens?

Being an f2 that makes it more than enough for a lot of video based shooting too.

If the lens is smaller than the 24-70 and 24-105 it could be a nice middle ground walking video lens.
As long as it has decent IS built in.

Just a thought.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Why canon?
« on: January 19, 2012, 07:26:24 AM »
Mine was a pretty simple reason.

Started with an old Pentax SLR back in ye olde times. When digital hit i decided to change. Choice was Canon or Nikon and honestly i just didn't like the feel of the Nikon compared to the Canon.

Simple as that.

I have all the respect in the world for Nikon and the D4 looks like a nice piece of kit but the ergonomics of their cameras just doesn't feel right to me.

I know that whenever I say anything nice about a couple of the Sigma lenses that I have, I get smitten, and it has made me think twice about throwing it out there as an option. In journalism they call it "chill" when one isn't directly censored but is deterred from expressing an opinion.

I hear that one loud and clear.

Its the same as if one was to mention the video capabilities of the Canon DSLR range (in video based topics mind you).

Sometimes it feels like that Faulty Towers scene with the Germans.... Don't mention the war!

Just read the article again and basically its doing exactly what the C300 is doing for down converting the video from 4K to 1080p.

Thought it sounded familiar but wasn't able to put my finger on it at first.

Its a good sign that the tech is cheap enough to produce by the sounds of it. Lets just hope that it gets here sooner rather than later.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon 1DX pricing in Australia
« on: January 16, 2012, 06:21:55 PM »
Just noticed that the $6800USD does not include their Sales Tax.

That can vary from state to state from 0% - 18% depending on where your located.

Might pay to add that to the price also (average is 14%)  but even then its still way cheaper than what we would be slugged.

Funnily enough i have been getting told the same kind of wild prices for the 5D3 pre orders too.
Everything ranging from $2500 - $7000.

Instead of the companies saying "we don't know" they take a wild guess and get you to put a deposit (the bigger the better) onto a camera you have no idea of the cost so you can be one of the first adopters.
why?
Simple ... remember the waits for the 5D2 last time?

This is why they do it.
If it comes out and you have paid a $2000 deposit on what you thought was going to be a $5000 camera and the final RRP is $2800 you only have $800 difference and so think that its was a bargain.
It gives the company ordering it for you the ability to say, we got you the best deal we could, and they come out the heroes.

Either way i just wish they would hurry up and give us more details on these cameras (1DX, 5D3, CinemaDSLR, C300) so we can work out what the damage will be to our credit cards.

we can only hope.

I think the thing is that these companies that are importing the camera and forcing the higher prices are also the ones that are complaining that people are buying "Grey Imports" and also internet/online stores such as DCW and eGlobal etc.

The fact is that until we the consumer stop purchasing at these higher prices they will not re examine the pricing rates.

I have heard prices range from $10k down to as low as $6500 for the 1DX. The main difference being that one is from a bricks and mortar store and the other is from an internet based one.

There is no such thing as a counterfeit DSLR camera, sure they may have different plugs and or crappy manuals but then you can always buy these things with the money you save or download the manuals from the Canon site. (here when available)

It all balls down to warranty and how much is it worth to you?
The convenience of being able to take your camera back to the place of purchase to get it repaired compared to the weeks it could take to ship it back to china or wherever the online store is located.

either way I'm waiting on more solid pricing (and not just pre order) to emerge from places like B&H and the other online stores so we can see what we are really paying.

EOS Bodies - For Video / Re: Splitting Audio from a Mono Mic
« on: January 15, 2012, 05:07:49 AM »
The OP does realise that most Mics are mono by default right?

Other than mics such as the Rode Stereo Video Mic and the likes.

If your editing in Final Cut it will allow for this (FCPX) or if older versions don't then just duplicate the audio channel to left and right.
Its pretty simple.

I would personally get a bag that just fits your travel necessities.  The camera body + lens and 2 other lenses at most.  Add flash, batteries, filters and charger.  It would keep your bag light and if it does get stolen, you wouldn't lose your entire camera collection!

So get two bags.  One for your outdoor/travel bag and a pelican or hprc hard case for the rest of your gear.

I have to agree with this.

If you were looking for cheap bag that wasn't too bulky or overly expensive there are some good ones on ebay (china direct) that actually fit a fair bit of gear in them.

i bought this one...

...just before xmas and it fits Gripped 60D, Gripped 5D2, Tokina 11-16, 50mm 1.8, 50mm 1.4, 24-105, z finder, lens gears, Rode video mic, LED light panel, Gorilla pod SLR Zoom, Zoom H4n 8 Spare LPe6 batteries, SD and CF Cards, iPhone and random bits and pieces (intervalometer, AA + AAA batteries, Markers etc)

AND a 13" Macbook Pro. (in its own 3rd party sleeve/cover)

Weighs a ton but its convenient having everything that i need in an easy to get too location while on a shoot.

Heres a few links to a couple of styles they do. (ignore the capacity ratings they give as they are way under estimated)

Satchel
Backpack
Girly  ;D

Before i used these bags i was a Crumpler user but as great as they are i can not justify the expense of them anymore.

Maybe you could refine the options a bit more.

Which kind of Karma should remain.

Positive only
No Karma at all
Just leave it alone
Whats Karma?

The reason i say this is i voted no, BUT i still agree with the Positive Karma idea.

So if it was a choice out of keeping it the way it is atm or not at all then i would say not at all. If on the other hand other options were put out there such as the ones above then that may give a more honest and overall opinion of the subject.

Lenses / Re: Lens Announcement at CES? [CR1]
« on: January 10, 2012, 06:56:12 PM »
soooo.... absolutely no good releases from canon at CES?.... Amazing ::)

Gotta admit, other than a few fancy iGadgets this CES is pretty boring.

Lets hope that NAB steps up to the plate or Canon pull something out on the last day of CES.

Good video, well shot.

Im waiting for some nice nights out this way in the next week or so so i can do some astral time-lapse.

Its a shame about the compression Youtube puts on it, maybe try Vimeo also?
