Lenses / Re: Just bought a new Canon EF 70-300L IS USM lens.

Have one for over a year now, must agree with Marsu42 about the reputation. On my 7D it works fine, not a patch on the 70-200 L IS II whose image IQ is outstanding.I find the 70-300 to be sharp, colour good, really only a daylight lens as it is let down by the apertures available,a touch more contrasty than I would prefer, lack of money means this will have to me.All in all ,not a bad lens by any means, hunts for focus in less than well lit conditions but can be lived with.your experience may different to mine,I live in Queensland Australia and have no lack of sunshine,41 degrees celcius here today,so the lens performs to my satisfaction.

Ha one for 2yrs,only ran canon, the jets being 1.5 picolitre, they are so easy to clog.Try living in Aus were you will pay $26 per cart.I now use Pro1 and ink is $39 rec'd

I live in Aus and all my plates,L brackets and ball heads are all RRS,for my money the best I have used in over 32yrs shooting,go to the Really Right Stuff website and peruse your options.they also talk about the systems mentioned in this thread.

Technical Support / Re: 5D Mark 111 and Lightroom 3 compatability issue?
« on: December 02, 2012, 05:10:34 AM »
Agree with PeterJ,Lr 3.6 is before 5dmkIII,upgrade to 4.2 is relatively cheap, even here in Australia, download a trial for 30 days and convert, also the latest version of DPP [on the disc w/- camera]does extremely good job, would suggest upgrade to Win 7,going cheaply at moment. The latest incarnation of Lightroom will knock your socks off,Adobe seem to finally be listening.

Hmmm sounds decidedly odd. Do your other lenses work OK on your 7D?

The Sigma 120-400  is never going to be a match for good L glass such as the most obvious equivalent, the Canon 100-400L. But the Sigma is half the price. Even so, what you describe absolutely shouldn't be happening. If you bought it new I'd be looking at a refund or a fresh copy if you're still inside the 14 day DOA period.

way outside return period, grey import[AUS],all other lenses, bar Sigma 150 F2.8 macro: 100 f2.8L IS,70-300 L IS,70-200 f4 L and Tokina 11-16 are sharp and crisp, the Siggy 150 is fine in manual and sometimes AF,doesn't display same degree of Doris, shall post so as to give you fine folks an idea of prob

I have the sigma120400 OS with 7d.

Mine front focusses by about 10 (which gives the soft look you described). After calibration is a lot better, but still slightly soft @ 5.6 but still very usable for up to A4 prints.

THis was at 5.6 http://www.flickr.com/photos/alexturton/7475200930/#

Gets very sharp at 7.1

Other samples: http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=58384486@N07&q=120400

The canon 100 400 is sharper @ 5.6. Both about the same by f8.

Because of the small max aperture I generally only use my sigma in good light.
similar front focus issues, have 70-300L which is a delight to use and extremely sharp will happily swap my Siggy for yours, lovely shots.

Two really obvious things here:
1. Is it better with manual focus/liveview with contrast detection?
2. We need pictures. Would you post some?
find it hard to use live view with birds,am viewfinder shooter except macro, will post shots from 5DmkIII,450D and 7D,will search them out and post. Thanks

Hah!  Very cool.  How many images were stacked?  I love the detail focus stacking can bring out.  I'm pretty new to this technique.  Here is one I took recently also of a dead spider husk that I found.
Canon 5DIII, 100mm Macro, 37mm extension tubes, 29 images stacked in PS5 and touched up in LR4.
14 images,this is the P-Max.

Before I knew better I bought the 120-400 OS following advice from one of the magazines, this lens has never worked properly giving milky pics with ghostlike halos around subjects,an allover softness which I liken to a Doris Day filter, funnily enough it turns out quite sharp and clear portraits on my friend's 5DmkIII.Has anyone come across a fix to get this lens to work on the 7D,have tried the AF adjust to get the focus to work, still has milky images. It turns out slightly more acceptable images on my 450D but still with a Doris Day filter

Lenses / Re: Need filter suggestions - Ordered Canon 100mm f2.8 L macro
« on: November 14, 2012, 01:47:01 AM »
I ordered a 100mm 2.8 L lens and should be picking up from the store tomorrow. I am planning to use this lens for Macro and Portraits. I use Hood on my other lenses at all times which I plan to do with the new lens as well.

Please suggest what filters I need for Macro and portrait. I do have a Marumi CP (77mm) that I use on my other 2 lens (77mm and 67 mm with a step down/up ring).

Thanks in advance.

I use only a CP when needed,no filters otherwise,I pesonally see too much degradation of images using UV filters,I use MT-24 flash for a lot of macro ,filters are not a requirement for the style of macro I shoot, when shooting portraits no filter is on the lens.I have yet to find a filter maker who can match the quality of glass that Canon turns out, I always keep in mind that I have a Very expensive piece of equpment at the end of my arm and act accordingly, after 8 yrs have had no scratches dings or dents with any of my digital gear, same goes for my 25 yr old film gear.Save yourself some money and just be aware of your actions and have fun.
