Canon General / Re: Announcement: Canon EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x

Silly price, 45% more than Nikkons offerring  :o. If this was reasonably priced, around $7500 may have considered it, I think I'll rather save $1000+ and go with a lighter weight and longer reach 500mm, or a faster 400 2.8.

The street price will drop at least 2500 in a few months...

They almost have to release an 800/5.6 MkII.  The 600/4 MkII with a 1.4xIII gives an 840mm f/5.6 lens that's lighter and has better IQ than the current 800L.  Can't imagine they're selling many 800s these days...

This is something I have have heard many time's but I have seen file's comparing the EF800 to the EF600 mk2 with 1.4111 and the ef800 is still the better len's,and not by an insignificant margin... I just sold my ef800 and am expecting delivery of a Nikon 800 but I might hold on a little longer to see what happens with the canon 800mk2..

Software & Accessories / Re: PP for realistic look - is DPP the best?

Lightroom and Photoshop CS6 extended is a powerful combination but also look at the excellent Phase one capture one pro 7 and Photo Ninja....

It'd be a shame if this was a 1 series body, I mean you don't really need the epic build quality and weather sealing in the studio and whilst it's nice for landscapers, i think the majority would prefer a lighter, smaller body. Although I'm sure a High mp 1 series body will fit some peoples needs.

I don't feel there is a full frame in the canon line up for me at the moment: 1dx out of budget. 5D mkiii, autofocus would be wasted on me. 6D, whilst a fine camera, doesn't quite cut it in areas I want. Just little things that add up like, lack of white balance button and thumb stick, not 5 series build quality and lack of cross points in the autofocus.

An ideal high mp camera for me would be:

New process 36 MP sensor
4/5 fps
7D autofocus
5D mkiii body and controls
7D metering

It'd sit well in the line up too:

6fps (MUST HAVE)
new process high DR 39MP
5D3 AF (MUST HAVE, 7D AF isn't that amazing)
5D3 body/UI
7D metering
top video (may need dual-digic to drive it fully off of 39MP and same for the 6fps)

Add D4 style backklit buttons to that list, they're excellent...

But again, just because you can print a portait large and it looks good doesn't mean a landscape photographer shooting with the same camera can print a photo large and have it look good. So I'd advise against making blanket statements about others not knowing what they're doing just because they say they could use more resolution.

+1
MP are not really the issue, even for some landscapers
it's the Canon-patented pattern noise.

I never shot with a 1Ds3 but I think it's actually got slightly better low ISO shadow performance than the 5d series.

I dumped my 1DX because of pattern noise,it's unacceptable from a camera of this price.. the next canon sensor will have to be at least as good as the exmor or I wont consider it..

I don't know why people keep banging on about the price, the RRP is high but street price's are 25% lower in the UK and europe..

lastcoyote.. I am in the same boat .. I have the

Canon 5D Mark III | 40D |35 F1.4L / 24-70mm F2.8L MKI / 24-105 IS F4L/50 f1.4 | 100 f2.8L IS Macro | 135 f2L  | 70-200 f4L IS |  580EX II/KENKO 1.4x and Canon 2x III
I have the 70-200mm 2.8 IS MKII and a 430EXII on the way ..

I want the 24-70 MKII ( already getting rid on 70-200 F4 IS (since 2.8 is on it's way) was thinking of getting rid of 24-70 MKI and keeping the 24-105 but looking at how good the 24-70 MKII is considering selling both and 50 F1.4...choices, choices..aaarggg.
I have purchased a 24-70mm 2.8 MKI, 135mm F2L, 100mm IS F2.8 Macro, 35mm F1.4L, 1.4x Kenco and 2X III teleconvertors and now the 70-200mm IS 2.8 IS and a 430EXII in less than 4 months...just for vacation shots and family photos.. explain that one to your wife (That's after buying the 5D MKIII for my Christmas gift to myself..lol)

man alive that's a lot of gear in such a short time  :o

i reckon you should sell the 24-70 MK I and the 24-105 to then get the 24-70 MKII.
keep the 50 f1.4 though as it can come in handy.

Good advice...

Low weight of primes is a big plus

Maybe not so much with the 200L f/2.0  ;) though I'd love to have one of those too.

I have the 200f2 also,it's a monster, I mostly use it in a indoors ,the DOF is razor thin when shot at f2 and the bokeh is beautiful.. its an exceptional lens but not one you could carry around for very long  unless your built like a tank (just like the lens is ).. lol

The only reason for fast primes for me now is shallow dof.
... and smaller and lighter is still a reason too (for me).

Low weight of primes is a big plus,if you don't carry it then you don't shoot it...

85L MK2 and 200F2 for sure.. but I would have a tough time leaving my 800mm,17mm tse ,70-200mm mk2, 8-15mm and 24 tse mk2 behind

Sidenote, Kodak operated in a market that went through disruptive change and they weren't able to follow/lead in that environment. A better example of a company that has or is about to lose touch with its market is Apple. They are trying to lock in their customers into proprietary solutions in a market that demands open and compatible solutions. Secondly, they have. already started to follow their competition with launching the mini ipad. Hence lost initiative.

Canon is not there and I can't see them going there either. Their dSLR lineup is the strongest ever and they're offering a very strong feature set in those products that helps the serious photographer in their daily business.

Well said. Canon do have some weaknesses (the most prominent being the ridiculous AF speed of the EOS-M), but as a whole, they are doing OK.
I completely agree with that. I don't know enough to point to specifics really. Nobody's perfect. I am very happy with my 5D3.  I am sure it could be better, i just don't know how.

It would be better of they added an extra two stops of dynamic range and cleaner shadow's..I can't think of much else except backlit buttons..

at 50MP why not just do a medium format camera ?

That would need a new range of lenses...

The 200f2 ,TSE-17 and the 85L mk2 are my favorite Canon lenses.. The only drawback of the 200f2 is the weight..with a 1DX it's a beast..

Oh and I forgot to mention the 8-15 zoom.. great fun .
