Canon General / Re: Canon EOS 1D X Press Release
« on: October 17, 2011, 11:31:50 PM »
No 1080p60. Seems odd. Sure, this isn't the video geared camera, but it still seems like a low blow from Canon to hold that feature from a flagship camera. After all, it's not special or exclusive anymore.

Other than that, it sure looks like an IQ monster there. I am very excited.

EOS Bodies / Re: New DSLR on Tuesday, October 18, 2011. [CR3]

In photomicroscopy, Zeiss has for many years produced a camera called the AxioCam, which uses a 1 MP CCD sensor plus 'tricks'.  It can take 'standard' images at 1 MP with the Bayer mask and interpolate the colors.  But one trick is to physically move the Bayer mask to make three separate exposures, so each pixel is exposed successively to R G B.  Obvoiusly, not something that would work in a dSLR, but fixed specimens are amenable to sequential imaging like that (in fact, some current color microscope cameras are actually b/w cameras with a color filter wheel in front that rotates through R G B).  Another trick ups the resolution - unlike current dSLRs, the CCD in the AxioCam has no microlenses, so each photosite only sees a small portion of the incoming light.  So, Zeiss also moves the sensor around in sub-pixel increments to expose the photosensitive part of the pixel to different regions of the incoming light - a 2x2 array gives a 5 MP image, and a 3x3 array gives a 12 MP image.  So, with those tricks a simple 1 MP sensor can generate a 12 MP image without any interpolated color!  Of course, it takes 27 separate exposures to make that one image...

Isn't that what Hasselblad are doing with their "200" MP H4D ?

Not buying it by a longshot. This rumor seems nothing more than a guess by someone who doesn't know what 3 years means in sensor and microprocessor time. He simply assumes that a full frame, 10fps camera wouldn't be able to perform with more that 18MP today.

The closeups on the rose and crane are very touching. It almost feels like I'm intruding.

Whenever I'm shooting multiple photos in the same location, I tend to switch to M simply for constancy.

EOS Bodies / Re: *UPDATE 2* Art Wolfe Confirms the 1Ds Mark IV?
« on: September 13, 2011, 07:26:22 PM »
Whatever the truth is in this particular incident, I think that the bottom line is one and the same. That is, we know that a 1Ds replacement is in developement (it would be madness otherwise) and even if it was present there it still does not tell us anything about a general public release date.

That he wished it was a new 1Ds ?

Mr. Wolfe might very likely have inside knowledge of future products and as such, as mentioned, be subject to a strict NDA. However, the participants of his workshop are not. That's why I find it extremely hard to believe Canon would bring a yet undisclosed product to such an event.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon 'Rep' tells BBC that "fewer megapixels are better"
« on: September 12, 2011, 11:54:49 AM »
The megapixel wars will not stop anytime soon. Setbacks and slowdowns might occur once in a while as new technologies are developed to overcome barriers but I have no doubt that we will have the same discussion at 50, 100 and 200 megapixels in the not too distant future.

The side surfaces are all wrong for it to be a 5D. On the 5d they are much smoother, while here you can clearly see sharper corners. The evolution of the edges around the mirror housing are reversed as well.

EOS Bodies / Re: Having Multiple Camera Systems
« on: September 06, 2011, 06:18:38 PM »
Photography is an exercise in compromises when we have a fixed, limited budget. That is true when one has to feed one system alone, let alone two. And since you mentioned that your wife wants a compact camera, my advice would be to go with the GF3. It seems like it would be a nice, capable body and the lens selection is pretty solid on the wide and normal range. The long range is lacking very fast choices but the 40-150 and 100-300 are pretty good lenses and while in low light you'd have to bump the ISO pretty high, it should work for those 5%.

EOS Bodies / Re: 5D Mark III & The Rest [CR2]

I find that a little tough to swallow since the 7D and 1DIV are both newer than the 5D and 1Ds. Of course, we could still see some kind of 1D/1Ds merger that would settle this.

Canon General / Re: So... Sony just dropped their Juggernaut!

The spec list looks great but something is iffy with the sample shots. They look too processed. Like they use too much NR and sharpening. At first I thought it is just sloppy job on dpreview's part but imaging-resource shows the same thing.

EOS Bodies / Re: BUY 5d MkII now or WAIT for 5d MkIII????
« on: June 11, 2011, 03:08:04 PM »
I'm pretty much in the same boat, only with a 5D MK1 and while I am not making a living out of photography per se,  I'm using it to supplement my work in 3D. So while I don't really NEED an upgrade, some of the quirks in the 5D are starting to bother me, especially compared to rentals 5D MK2s and 7Ds that I found myself using when I needed to shoot some videos.

Anyway, finally I decided to buy a 7D now and probably get the 5D MK3 sometime next year. My reasoning was that while I could wait a couple of months for the new 5D to come out, it 1) Might not really come so quickly and B) I'll probably won't lay money down to preorder it as I'll want to read some full reviews first.  That obviously means I will have to wait for a regular or semi-regular stock and that probably means sometime well into 2012.
