This is Crap... While Nikon is on schedule releasing great stuff, Canon releases defective and late equipment...

Good luck with finding a D800.

Canon General / Re: I've switched to the Dark Side (no, Literally).

Speaking of smells, once I made a batch of D76 and didn't realize the container I used was not thoroughly clean from the cleaning liquid that previously occupied it. It didn't affect the negatives in any way except for giving them a very nice and faint smell of lemons that somehow remained even after the fixer and all the washing. :)

What the hell is up with Canon?  Man, if only my entire professional SLR / DLSR system was not built of Canon stuff.... I've been a "Canon Man" for nearly 25 years, but I'd ditch it all in a second if I could afford to.  I know at least one very well known (both him and his father) action sports / landscape photographer that is considering jumping ship.  Between the MkIII, and the 1 DX, and I don't even know what problems or delays Canon is having, or will have, with their Cinema bodies / lenses, etc.  All we see from Canon are patents for new lens designs, it seems they want to, on paper, lock up designs.  Mean time, their products as of late are delayed with out any explanation, or showing up with flaws, etc.

I must say, as a professional shooter and career long Canon guy, I am very, very disappointed.

Well, you might take solace in that if you do switch to Nikon you will face a much poorer stock issue, with the D800 being only the latest example of products that are not always readily available. You might also want to check out some of the threads discussing lock-up problems mainly with the D4 but also the D800. But at least you would have dodged the bullet of the overheating batteries than Nikon are now in the process of recalling.

I am just missing where he is acutally calibrating the camera? I

The article is this one: http://www.hurlbutvisuals.com/blog/2010/03/color-correction-put-your-best-foot-forward/

And he starts talking about the in-camera adjustments with the paragraph containing:
Quote
Some cameras come with a yellow bias, a magenta bias and or a green bias.  Sometimes you get one that is perfect from the factory but from my experience that is not the case.

Which sounds like pretty much what you are experiencing.

edit: And here is a quote from him in the comments section:

Quote
The WB shift is good for simple corrections, not big swings. But that is usually all that is required to balance the camera, maybe you should send that baby back to Canon. I have sent back 4 of my 7D’s. I cannot get them to look right.

And that's simply the nature of manufacturing. Tolerances will always exist and some bodies are inevitably at the extreme ends of the tolerance margin.

I would be shocked that Canon would want blonde showing purple tint and call it an update.
You are right but honestly I haven't seen an example such as yours before. While I haven't conducted any direct comparisons, I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary with light hair in my photos.

I will look through that article and see if we can set the internal WB. That is what I have been looking for. Still believe that it should be preset and not left to the end user to tinker with.

What Shane explains is better than a preset. It may take a little bit more time initially, but that effort will not only ensure a properly calibrated camera in itself but also between different bodies which is more important IMO.
It's a lot like AMFA. A pain in the ass, but totally worth the effort.

Yeah, I might do the same. Heck, I even might pickup a D800. I heard that when you shoot the back of your lens cap on the Nikon, you can actually see the writing back there. IT IS THAT GOOD !!!!

I too like the colors of the 5D3 more than with the 5D2. They are closer, to my eyes, to the 5DC which I love.
Canon will not fix it because there is nothing defective. At most, this an updated color profile representation by them. They decided it is better this way and unless there will be a massive uproar from costumers they won't change it.

BTW, did you read the link posted earlier to Shane Hurlbut's blog? He shows how to calibrate the camera internally using the WB shift function. That's what Tcapp was referring to.

These nice black images can actually be useful. You can print one (YES print), then cut a small rectangle and use it to cover... the LCD :) :)

Not only that, but the defective, underexposed one will actually be more useful than the correct one. You know, because it is...blacker.

well, you may want to look again at the pictures in section 2 where Fred Miranda examines and compares dynamic range for the 2 cams ...  and see how ***fully justified*** all the "whining" is!

You mean the part where he pushes the shadows 4-5 stops? Indeed you are right. The performance of the D800 would really have helped in the recent trend of lens cap photographing.

once you are through the article, you'll start whining too. :-)

All I see is a bunch of beautiful photos from both cameras and a couple of ugly ones from both.

YOU ARE RIGHT !!!!

In fact, all manufacturers should stop shipping defective products immediately. The fact that means than no product will ever be sold again anywhere is of no concern to me.

This is a very reasonable response from Canon. No need to recall and create hysteria when the overwhelming majority of users won't be affected anyway.
