How about a 50mm that is actually worth buying?  I'd love a 50L 1.4.  No front/back focus issues, sharp wide open, and ring USM.  I'd take it with or without IS.

...and travel/times when I may not want a $2,300 lens with me.

Now I use the 24-105 as a travel lens for those holdiay destinations where I would be overly nervous having both  the 5d and the 24-70, my stuff is insured but I'm a risk averse kind of guy...

Agree.  Good reason to justify keeping the 24-105.

Also have both after getting in on the $1699 deal at B&H for the 24-70.  At this point I don't see myself selling my 24-105 for such a low price.  I much rather keep it than "give" it away.  I expect to use it as more or a travel/vacation lens.  If things change where the resale value is $800 or higher (which will never happen), I'd probably sell it.

Not sure how you read a serial number. Everyone on here is quoting "032" and "062". Out of curiosity I looked at my copy, ser. # 9515005637, appearing on the bottom of the barrel. What does that mean?
This is what I've been going by:

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: Off Brand: Nikon Announces the Df

Exactly.  I'd rather put my money towards my next practical lens.

Well that will surely get you in trouble  ;)

Very cool, thanks for sharing!  Bookmarked, thinking about it.

Software & Accessories / Re: Really Right Stuff B2-FABN: Mini-Clamp
« on: October 30, 2013, 10:41:12 AM »
I use the B2-FABF (F without the strap boses, N with) and love it.  Recently I switched to the AS system which is without a doubt one of the best things I ever did.  My B2-FABF lives on my BR strap and I have AS plates on my bodies and 70-200 collar.   I can rapidly switch between strap and tripod.  Unlike the photo on RRS's site, I orient the knob on the B2-FABF so it is towards the front of my body.  Pick one up you will love it.  I'd get the "F" version unless you plan to use the strap bosses.

Hey everybody :)

Got my 24-70 mk II yesterday, no clicking at all.

From Canon Europe though

Zoom ring is a bit tighter than I imagined it would be though
Mine too, tight like my 24-105.  I was expecting it to be more like my 70-200 II or 16-35 II.  Maybe has something to do the with the design of external zooming to maintain weather seal.

Lots of disappointment and frustration today will benefit others once all these returns finally show up on Canon's refurb store.  Have no idea how long this cycle takes ( from buyer back to seller, to Canon, thru refurb process, to online store) but I'd be watching the refurb store like a hawk in the weeks to come if I was in the market.

I still can't believe I lucked out and got a good copy.

Mine is being delivered by end of today.  I've practically got my RMA form filled out.

Just got my lens (20 minutes ago) and no clicking sound  :o ;D 8) (shocked, happy, cool!)

Date code is March, 2013 with the new style lens cap.   Got the day off tomorrow to play with my lens.  Once it tests good, I'll cut out the barcode out and send it in for my $300 Amex card.

What a long day, UPS didn't show up until after 7:00 PM.  Felt like a  kid waiting for Santa.

BTW, that lens cap is very nice, I think I may have to replace my others.

This break-in period is nonsense IMO.

The clicking sound you guys are hearing is the elements 'crossing' over through the zoom range....
This was my initial thought too but of course I have no evidence that this is case.  The real concern is the inconsistency.  Some lens are noisy while others are quiet, that in itself is enough to be concerned.  Therefore if mine is noisy (which I am fully expecting it will be), it's going back.

Lenses / Re: 17-40mm L or 24-105mm L for crop sensor 20D?
« on: October 19, 2013, 11:39:53 AM »
I would only consider the 24-105 along with the 10-22 but that will exceed your budget.  You should be able to pick these up used for not a lot more than your current budget.  Maybe get one now and the other a little later.

Otherwise get the 17-55 (for wide aperture) or 15-85 (if range is more important).

Personally I would not get the 17-40 for crop (no IS, f/4), where the 17-55 is much better choice (IS, f/2.8 )

Pricewatch Deals / Re: Deal: Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L II $1699 at B&H Photo
« on: October 18, 2013, 11:29:23 AM »
Either this $1699 after rebate price is a hoax or B&H screwed up for a very short time. I tried to get in on this deal and it is no longer running. I called B&H and inquired about it and a rep named Joshua told me it is only a rumor, it's $1999 AFTER rebate.. not $1699.

Just wanted to put this out there. $1699 definitely worth it to me. $1999, not so much.

It looks like the $1,999 deal is off at B&H.  Just put the lens in my cart and advanced up to the "Place Order" and it is $2,299.  I did order mine a couple of days ago for $1,999.  B&H did email me the $300 Canon mail-in rebate after I placed my order so I'm sure my final price will be $1,699.

It looks to me that there was a mini price war on this lens when Amazon dropped their price to $1,999 before rebate, B&H simply followed for a few days.

One thing I've learned over the years on camera gear, when there is a good deal, you have to react immediately.
