EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Batteries and AF
« on: April 07, 2013, 01:10:46 AM »
I'll throw this one out there

I had 3 OEM LP-E6 batteries for my 7D (1 original, 2 spares).  When I got my 5D3, one of the spares would not power on my 5D even though it worked just fine on my 7D.  Anyway, long story short, I was the victim of a counterfeit LP-E6 and was truly fooled by the almost perfect replication of the fake--even the packaging was near perfect.  Not suggesting yours is counterfeit but it might be worth checking into.

Otherwise, sounds like something internal happened (drop, bang) damaging the battery causing the output voltage to be too low.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Low level formatting of CF Card
« on: March 31, 2013, 10:29:08 PM »
If you are doing low level formats on CF cards, make sure you perform an in camera format after.

Speaking of low level formatting, anyone know why you can do a low level format for a SD card in camera but not for a CF?    My 5D3 has an option for the SD but not the CF, and my PowerShots (SDs) can do low level as well.  Not that I really care about doing a low level format but I would like to understand that.

6D or 5D III + 24-70 f2.8 II, 70-200 f2.8 IS II, and 50L or 35L. SELL EVERYTHING ELSE
+1 except I'd go for the 5D3 and not the 6D.

I agree with Mt Spokane that most people will not use their crop bodies once they go FF.  I am an exception.  I do use my 7D.  If you find the need for a crop body later on, pick up a used 7D down the road, they should be plentiful and cheap.

Edit:  For me choosing between the 50L or 35L would be tough.  I want both but I'm dragging my feet waiting for Canon to update the 35L (WS) and update all their 50s.  If I had to pick today, I'd go 35L.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS-b Images Leak & a New Kit Lens

"EOS-b"????

What customer is going to buy a "b" camera?
i.e. how many will ask "So where is the EOS-a?" and want to buy that?
Funny, that was my very FIRST impression when I read the announcement this morning.  What happened to the "a" model.

If it is much smaller than a Rebel then how will you hold it?
Hmm, even the current Rebels feel too small for me.  When I pick up an old film body it also feels dinky, but back then we didn't know different.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Keep or sell my 7D
« on: March 09, 2013, 10:02:51 AM »
Since it sits in your bag and you are not using it, sell it.  But hurry, its losing value. However if it reaches a point where you don't think you can get much for it (condition, shutter count), I wouldn't give it away for a few hundred dollars.

I kept mine because I still use it, just not as much.   Besides its a great body and I couldn't part with it.

Maybe it's just me, but on a lens this cheap, I would pay the small premium to buy new from an authorized dealer rather than risk buying used. Particularly because it isn't the most robust lens in the world and you just never know what kind of abuse a used lens has been subjected to.
Agree.

Then you can sell it when you are ready and get...
How about a 70-200 f.4? They're going for $474 refurb at Canon USA. Superior in every way.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Amazon vs B&H for purchase?
« on: March 03, 2013, 11:10:12 PM »
Up until February 1st it was a toss up for me, and I have bought from both regularly but I did favor Amazon because I used an Amazon credit card and got a nice kicked back in credit for future purchases.

As of Feb 1st, Amazon started charging me tax.  I cannot tell if it is Federal or state.  B&H does not charge me tax, at least not yet.  The only thing I can figure is there is an Amazon warehouse in my state/county.  Sorry to say but I will not be making anymore large camera purchases from Amazon as long I can buy tax free from B&H.  It is a pity because Amazon's service is fantastic but so is B&H.  I've had such bad luck with Adorama (3 problems out of the last 4 orders) that I don't plan on giving them another order.  So for me right now, B&H is my single source for major purchases.

Either Amazon or B&H are excellent, you can't go wrong with either.  I would run the items through your cart to verify what the final price will be.  Congrats on the upgrade, exciting times.

I wound up buying a 3rd 600 so I'm set. Got it on Tuesday. I never see Canon responding here. Have you tried the new Canon Forums? They responded to the 5D3 AF assist issue in those forums.

Ya, I wander over there once in a while but the content here is farrrr better.

Lighting / Re: POLL: When will Canon release the 430ex2 successor with rt?
« on: February 28, 2013, 11:46:09 PM »
Hurry up already.  Its been long enough Canon.  I've got two 600s and a ST-E3-RT.  I want a smaller more compact RT unit.

Also, how about adding and expanding your gels.  We all know how you like selling accessories.

+1 with you, Azezal. Unfortunately, it seems we are few.
I'm even in a smaller group, no GPS, no WiFi, no swivel screen, and no touch screen.

Canon General / Re: Bag question
« on: February 15, 2013, 08:36:16 AM »
I am looking for suggestions to carry some of my gear. Specifically:

Canon 7D, 60D, 70-200 f/2.8 L II, 24-70 f/2.8 LII, 85 f/1.2, Speedlite 600, Extra batteries, cables etc.

I was thinking about: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/169546-REG/Tamrac_560301_5603_Camera_Bag_Black_.html

I am not sure if that bag can hold the two bodies & the rest of the gear. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Looks way too small for the gear you listed.   Start with Lowepro's bag finder tool and see what that recommends for you

EOS Bodies / Re: Cost of Canon 5D mk III
« on: February 10, 2013, 04:05:05 PM »

5D3 sales for ~$2500 have happened already and are bound to happen again. Just get one then.

pardon my stupid question, but is there a way for me to know when such sales are going on?
I don't monitor this forum daily - should I ? would it be posted here? Or perhaps there is an easier way?

thanks

1) keep an eye here as I see CR post from time to time when massive rebates occur.
2) keep an eye on adorama ebay store and other legitimate vendors with ebay presence.
3) keep an eye on canonpricewatch.com especially their deals section

A few fly-in-the-ointment comments.  Timing wise, we just had the rebate cycle at the end of the year and you may have missed a good chance, but these chances reoccur periodically.  You may just have to wait some. Also, these fire-sales happen and end so quickly, you need to have a firm price point and game-plan and clinch the right deal when you see it. Few 100 units sold and you could be out of luck if you are thinking about it. If you are in Europe or certain countries, all bets are off as I hear customs penalizes imports with added tariffs at entry.  This is to ensure you buy locally and support native vendors and pay higher taxes.

Regardless, always choose reputable dealers as this is a purchase over 2K. In your desperation to land a good deal, never compromise on that. If t looks too good to be true, it probably is. Good luck.

I would also add Amazon, B&H, and Norman Camera to your daily list of sites to check.  I set myself a price threshold of $3000 and that was after the first wave of $2500 ebay deals which I could never bring myself around to biting on.  When Amazon dropped below $3000 late last year (I think it only lasted a couple of days) I pulled the trigger.  I also knew in the back of my mind it was just a matter of time until online sales tax kicked in--well that day has come for me sooner that I though so do put off your purchase for too long.  If you see a fair deal I'd go for it, that fantastic deal may never come.  It's hard to say when the $2500 deals will show up again.  Personally I'm sticking with authorized dealers but then again I'm not a gambler.  Good luck.
