Lenses / Re: Is your midrange gear insured?
« on: February 14, 2013, 02:22:46 PM »
I didn't think much about insurance until I got my 5D3. Shorty before I dropped my 500D by accident with a Tamron 17-50 attached, the latter suffered a 200€ damage which is almost like it totaled.

When I got the 5D3 the first thing was to insure everything, well not everything, body, lenses and flash are insured. Small things like sd cards, batteries and so on are automatically included. I also carry around a rough 7000€ in my camera bag and doing that without insurance is not only stupid but downright irresponsible. Getting nicked is one thing and that can happen to anyone out on a photo trip alone if you cross the wrong peoples way but I also wanted it insured just for the case I accidentally drop it again. That 2.5% of the gear value I pay per year is worth it the second you drop it or someone threatens you.

My new revised weather isolation technique which shall be named "Breakfast Bag" finally reached its ultimate form. You can only hardly distinguish it from a non-isolated 135L.

Oh you mean like the 35 1.4 which is a big ass dream contrary to the older 50 1.4 and 85 1.4 which just fuck up on every full frame?

Um it's only gonna snow a bit on saturday, my 5D3 should stand that. Gotta get one of that rainbags in the future somehow though.

Did that. Revised it to a v2 after recognizing some dust under the filter and ripping it off again.  ::)

Weather-proofed my 135 today. Well, at least temporarily.

The 50 1.4 suffered heavy price drops here in germany today, about 15% down on several retailers. Hope that means they're getting rid of it and its replacement is on the way.

I'm afraid a 14-24 will be insanely expensive, let alone you'd take a 16-35 and put up an IS to that... 2000$ pew pew.

For 24-70 I recommend the Tamron with 2.8 and VC. Telephoto wise, well no one can decide that for you. The 70-200 4L IS is dead sharp, 2.8L II IS is even sharper. Also, double the cost.

Sigma 35 1.4 is image quality wise better than Canon's 2.0, the latter comes with IS though if you need it for handholding and low light. I would probably also go with the Sigma though just because it's awesome sharp at 1.4.

When you want to use a Takumar 50mm 1.4 SMC on a full frame, you'll run into the problem with the mirror hitting the back of the lens. You can mod the lens though, wrote a bit about that on my website www.florianbieler.de. Going to try the lens out as soon as my M42 adapter arrives.
