Lenses / Re: Need your opinions on selling my 50L and 24/70L
« on: March 25, 2013, 02:09:00 PM »
Well I owned the 50 1.4 on my 500D times back then, I didn't like it so much anymore on the 5D3 and sold it. I now got the 50L and absolutely love it, you just can't compare them. The 50L is big, heavy, a bokeh monster and weather isolated whereas the 50 1.4 is a average built 20 year old lens with just a different look.

The new Sigma 35mm 1.4 is a complete new design and doesn't suffer from the focus issues like the 50/1.4 and 85/1.4.

The focus issues with the 50L have been fixed in newer revisions as I was told... I got a lens from 2012 and I have no focus shift issues at all, tried various apertures and they all fit.

Got it a week ago, did almost a whole portrait shooting with it today (only 135L for one other picture), here's the first. Wide open of course. Bokehlicious.

Dropped the 35IS again... for a 50L which will probably be of more use to me regarding my portrait work. Gonna use it this weekend for the first time on a girl, be sure to check in for the results ;)

You know you can fix that yourself, right?

Do tell. Thanks.

Explained here in english and a method I would very much prefer is explained here but only in German, try google translator or anything.

No reason not to use it for stills, its even possible thet the distance scale on the lens might mean something, it certainly is totally inaccurate on the non cine version.

The later versions were fixed, I got that lens from the german distributor Walimex in December 2012 and it my scale was perfectly correct.

Debatable. I got the Rokinon version this fall (September I think) and the scale is completely off.

You know you can fix that yourself, right?

Florian: I see in your signature that you do not longer have the Tamron 24-70/2.8. Is it so and if so, why? No good?

Pär

Overall I was satisfied with the Tamron, but I also got a 17-40 now which is a more likeable lens for a hike or something because of the extra milimeters at the bottom. For portait I use 100L or 135L when I can and I always try to. I did not mount the Tamron that often and when I did, I used it mainly in lower focal ranges, I almost never use anything between 50 and 70mm.

Anyway, I am waiting for the new 50mm IS and when this releases, I would have sold the Tamron anyway. I got a 35mm IS for now and that is smaller, lighter and faster than the Tamron so it's probably going to be my hand-held-walkaround lens until or if an affordable 50 IS drops.
