EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS 5DS & EOS 5DS R Press Release

I'm wondering if Canon finally added the spot metering linked to the AF point… I don't understand why they keep that only on the 1D serie while Nikon offers it on most of their cameras :/
Other than that I'm quite excited about this announcement! Can't wait to compare it to the current Canon's bodies.

Finally a 50mm with a decent AF system?
The 135mm f/2 L IS would be lovely for weddings!

I love the idea of the 1Dx's price dropping :) It's about time!

Lenses / Re: What is your favorite lens and why?
« on: March 28, 2013, 05:13:41 AM »
My favorites lenses are the 50 1.8 and the 70-200 2.8 IS. The 50 because it's so cheap but still delivers pretty good image quality and 70-200 because for weddings & portraits it's my go-to lens.

Lenses I wish to have? Well, for starters the 50 1.2 so that I'd have something weather sealed, more solid and less noisy (that would come handy for small weddings…) than the 1.8. I'd also like to get the 70-200 2.8 IS II because it seems to deliver even better IQ than the old version I have! Other than that I think I'd be quite happy with any Canon prime lens I could get my hands on (14, 35, 85, 135, 100 macro, 90 TS-E, 200 2.0) :)

So the 6D has a sync speed of 1/180th while this toy camera could go up to 1/200th? If that's true I really don't get what Canon is doing with the specs of their semi-pro/pro cameras…
100-25'600ISO range, 1/4000th max shutter speed, 9 AF point with 1 cross type, SD slot only… actually, is it a 6D in a smaller body at half (or third) of the price because of the APS-C sensor? hahaha I hope not… but seriously, Canon should push out some new lenses (35 1.4 to compete with the new Sigma, 50 1.2 and 1.4, eventually start selling the 200-400…) and flashes (where's the 4xxEX with RT?).
I know Canon sells probably more entry level cameras than pro or semi pro, but seriously… EOS M,  EOS1xxxD, EOS 6xxD, EOSxxD and now that? Too much to choose from and people will most likely be lost more than happy  :-\

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS 7D Mark II Spec List [CR2]

With the GPS & WiFi being integrated, I'm wondering if it'll have a pop-up flash or not.

I'm sure that the day they put the same specs on a full frame camera that is not part of the 1D serie many Canon photographers will buy it!
IMO the specs of the 6D should have looked more like the 5DIII and the 5DIII's should have looked more like these 7DII rumored specs.

It shows free shipping.   :-\
How much the import duty can be?
Usually the import duty is about the VAT of your country + an admin fee from the delivery company. However you can sometimes get lucky if the customs decide not to check your parcel and might have no import duty to pay.

Technical Support / Re: 5dmkIII Mac Os Lion LR4.2 tethered issues
« on: January 24, 2013, 03:50:51 PM »
I just shot an editorial project yesterday. I did the whole thing with my 5DMKIII tethered and had no problem.

I did half of the shoot tethered to Lightroom and the other part tethered to Canon EOS Utility. Both installed in their most recent versions on a MacBook Pro running OSX Lion – which was updated the day before the shoot. So everything was updated.

I shot about 350-400 pictures in total that day. I didn't experience any camera freeze, software crash or any other kind of trouble. Everything worked like a charm! Finally :)

Glad Capture One 7 also works. I tried it a few weeks back and I couldn't even get the camera to be recognized by the software… But well, now that EOS Utility seems to eventually work I won't bother using any other software (except for LR from times to times depending on the work I'm actually doing).

Canon General / Re: Canon Experience Stores Coming Soon [CR3]

Well... I hope for them they can figure something out to make their 5D MKIII and 1D X tether properly with all the iMacs they'll have "for education"  ::)

May I jump in here... any (preferably European) recommendations for someone who does low cost (it is for family only) photobooks that would have over 450 pages? Blurb only has 440 pages maximum...?
I'm sorry... but have you put a 0 after 45 and 44 by error? Never heard of such big books! If the paper is a quality one I can't even imagine the weight of a 440 pages album.
The day I hear one of my client asking for more than 100 pages I'll know something is wrong…

Totally forgotten about the tethering… I did my last shootings with my laptop and so didn't use the tethering. I got used to it since I have had my 5D MKIII.
I'll definitely give it another shot in the next few weeks and will let you know about how it's going.

There are lots of choices available out there! You'll need to choose depending on what you want to offer (quality, look, feel, paper, mount type, covers choice, etc).

Azura Albums, Laguna Albums, Kiss albums or Finao (Seldex) are (very) good from what I hear. I don't know about BayPhoto but it seems to be a well known lab in the US.

Being based in Europe, I get my books done by Loxley Colour (small size prints as well) and Folio Albums. As for my higher end books I get them from LeatherCraftsmen (US based lab). LeatherCraftsmen makes awesome hand made books.

I also know that Queensberry (based in NZ if I'm not wrong) has some pretty interesting options, especially when it comes to covers. I've never had my hands on one of their books though.

Hope this helps :)

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: right now i am not happy to be a canon user

Try checking the prices in Switzerland. It's cheaper than in Europe. The 5DMKIII is about 2400-2500€ and the 6D is 1500-1600€.
Europe is quite expensive when it comes to electronic devices, we are quite lucky in Switzerland as we have fairly "better" pricing, somewhat closer to USA's pricing.

Otherwise, as said Neuro, you might want to check your options. Complaining on a forum about pricing surely won't change much… If you don't have much glass, why not switching to Nikon? If you do have a lot of glass and only want a backup body, why not looking at used bodies on ebay? 2nd hand 5DMKIIs can be found quite cheap on the web.

Or why not wait for the prices to come down a bit? The 5DMKIII has been around for less than a year and its price has already dropped! I bought my 5DMKIII about 3-4months ago for almost 300€ more than what it can be found now.

So far LR4.3 seems to be what works best when using my 5DMKIII tethered. EOS Utility (2.12.3) will freeze after 2-3 pictures, LR4.2 after 4-5pictures and I can't get it to work with Capture One 7.
I shot about 100 pictures without experiencing any slow down or problem. I didn't give it a thorough and extensive testing as I didn't have any shooting this past weekend. I'll try again this week on a shooting/real-world situation and let you know how it went.

For info, my laptop is a MacBook Pro running on OSX Lion (10.8.2). I also own a 7D which works perfectly tethered with either EOS Utility or LR.

I had the exact same problem with my 5DMKIII until LR 4.3 was released. I now can finally use my 5DMKIII tethered to my laptop without any issue.

It won't work with EOS Utility though, even with the latest version (2.12.3)  :-\
