I have one of the first 5D3s on the market.  I running the original firmware.  Do I need to update to each firmware to get to the latest, or can I jump right to the last version.  Also, how exactly do I update the firmware?  How do I get it on to the CF card without a card reader?

Hi, no you dont need to update  to each firmware, you can jump straight to the latest version.
To update without a card reader, you just need to install the latest version of EOS Utility and plug your 5D3 to your computer via USB. Then just follow the instruction you'll find on a pdf file inside the zip folder of the new firmware.

Hi,

i'm just back from 2 weeks in Namibia last month.

Here is what  i had :

5d mk3
24-70 2.8l ii
70-200 2.8l is ii
extender 2x iii

all fitted in a lowepro flipside 200 aw, which was pretty convenient to carry.

as you have 2 bodies, i'd say longer lenses on the 7d and wide ones on the 5d mk 3.

imho no need to have many lenses. just pick one carefully for each body and stick to it.
try to find a bag where you can put them both with the lenses already fitted to the bodies (it will save you time to clean).

consider a wide range tele like the 100-400 with maybe a teleconverter. it might be a more versatile option over have multiple lenses.

Technical Support / How to AFMA precisely without Lenscal?

Hi,

i'm a new owner of both Canon EOS 5d Mark III & Canon Ef 24-70mm 2.8L II.

I've never done AFMA before. Is there any simple yet very precise way to do it without having to invest in things like Lenscal?

Would a Canon repair center do it (and at what cost since both items are under warranty)?

Never say never on such things.

It will happen, and it's forseable.

Why? Simply because every products no matter what the domain or when follow the same life curb.

I've not search FF body history and launch price for each item, but if someone can help remember those i would be glad to help and create a predictory chart so we can answer this question.

According to what you describe, a 5D mk2 would be well suited for you. with the arrival of the 6D, you can find it at a great deal.

So i am wondering... is there a Nikon troll who sneak in this forum to start that subject? Or are we all so fans of Canon that we are somehow blind at this supposed declined?

Correct me if i'm wrong but what's the point of IS in such short focal lengths?

With the release of 24-70 f/4L IS it will be a tough choice for some to decide with the 2.8 non IS version, what do you think?

Lenses / Trip to Namibia next year... what gear?

Hi,
i currently own a Canon EOS 400D (rebel xti)
and some lame kit lenses (18-55mm f4,5-5,6 & 80-200mm f4,5-5,6).

I have a trip sheduled early next year for 2 weeks in Namibia. For what i've read of the tour there will be a lot of landscape, as well as animals & people portraits photography opportunities.

So, if you had to go there, what gear would you recommand (even if it involve a massive upgrade of my current gear)?

- early 90s  : 1st camera, a Konica Z up 28w (film P&S)
- 1995 : collection (never shoot with it) Canon demi EE 17 (inherited from my grand father)
- late 90s : 1st SLR (film), Canon EOS 500n (Rebel G)
- 2007 : 1st DSLR, Canon EOS 400D (Rebel xti)
- 2012 :
Sony DSC-TX10 (inherited from my late young brother)
(planned) Canon EOS 5D mk III

> lenses :
- late 90S :
Canon EF 28-80mm f4,5-5,6 (don't use it anymore)
Canon EF 80-200mm f4,5-5,6 (slow & not really sharp, tired of it)

- 2007 : Canon EF-S 18-55mm f4,5-5,6
- 2012 (planned) :
Canon EF 24-70mm f2,8L II
Canon EF 70-200mm f2,8L IS USM II + extender 2X III (in preparation of a trip next year to Namibia)
