Vague indeed. I would not read "new" to mean revolutionary, game-changing, etc. without a lot more info. Could just be a new arrangement of af points and a make 6 processor.

Trying to learn the skill of BIF photography on my 7D and 100-400L or 70-200LII/2.8. Have been practicing on several herons that frequent here. It's a lot harder than I expected. :P Most of the shots (>90%) are totally worthless OOF blurs :'( Starting to get a few almost acceptable shots which I will post for C&C. For those that are proficient, what settings do you use? Things like (on a 7D) AV or TV mode, what autofocus settings (zone, AF point expansion, etc), metering setting, etc? I try to limit ISO to 400 but that means wide aperture (shallow DOF-blurry) and/or slow shutter speed (again, blurry shots). Maybe I need a 5D3 or 1DX ;D Thanks for any suggestions. Here are some of my better ones from past 2 days.

I use a 7D TV mode,  with shutter speed set to 1/800th or faster and Auto ISO with a limit of 800.  I also use back button focusing in Servo.  I'll usually use evaluative metering, but sometimes switch to partial or spot if there's a lot of contrast in the scene.  I love the 7D's fps capability.  With a fast flying bird, (assuming I can get it in the frame!) I get around half as keepers, and probably 20% I'd consider good.  Agree, it's harder than I thought it would be.

Lenses / Re: 70-300L / 100-400L / Keep 70-200

I love my 70-300L.  I actually find that it works quite well with my Kenko teleconverter (Pro 300) - just make sure you have AFMA done right on the bare lens.  I too sold my 70-200 f/4L IS along with a Tamron 70-300 VC when I got it.

This was shot in terrible conditions (I just couldn't get close and didn't have time to wait around) last week.  It's not a great picture, but I attach it to show the 100% crop.  This was wide open (f/8) with the 70-300L and Kenko 1.4x - 420mm.  100% crop shows how nicely sharp the image is, particularly considering that I was shooting through layers of tree and grass.

Mmmh... Could it be some video-related stuff? I'm leaning towards a new kind of contrast detect AF or something to replace (or byside) it, rather than something phase detect AF-related.

Some new AF technologies are in prototypes.

There is a new hybrid AF (a combination of phase and contrast af) and a new AF for video making out for testing.

... a new type of autofocus technology.

Genuinely new or just new for Canon?

what kind of AF (usefull for a DSLR) has canon not used but other DSLR makers have?

Pellicle mirror.

that´s just a semi-transparent mirror and canon has used that in the 60s for metering and later (look at my name ) for focusing.

but the AF is still phase detection.

not sure if canon would call that a new AF....
but then... sensor based phase detection would not be new either.

Is it just me, or is that some nice bokeh?
