New video lenses?

I’d like to say up front I am completely ignorant to cine lenses and the whole world of video.

I received a message yesterday that Canon is planning a set of PL primes to compete with Zeiss.

How realistic that is is unknown to me, but it may be worth discussing.

What should they have extra then? Manual focus? Grab FTM, and you're there. Sharpness? If i look at photozone.de, Zeiss drops the ball every now and then, they're pretty much in line with the current L primes. The only thing could be manual stops selection, but who would want that back? I think that if they want to compete in video (aiming at RED, and fighting Nikon on the way up), their bodies should get an update first. Sony is showing off with their new funnies (33 and 55), lenses can come later. Much later.

this makes very little sense to me. At first I thought it did and was pointing toward a new camera but when/if canon creates a large sensor video camera i have to believe it will have an eos mount. i CAN see them creating a line of lenses that are video centric for EOS but not PL - they don't make a PL camera...

PL Lenses will not fit Canon DSLR's, Sounds like a kid making up something.  It is possible that Canon is planning a PL mount cinema camera to compete with RED, but that would be a whole new ball game, of little interest to DSLR users, but of great interest to professional makers who do TV shows, commercials, or movies, and have the hundreds of thousands to invest.

Zeiss already offers Compact Cinema  Lenses with adapters so they can adapt to Canon EF mounts, PL mounts, or F mounts.  You can purchase them with EF mount or PL Mount, plus you can purchase adapters. F mounts are not yet available, but if Nikon produces a video camera that becomes popular, they will appear.

Looks like Canon may be a little late to the party.

BTW Canon has been making Broadcast Lenses for years and they Don't Make A Broadcast Camera. So it sounds reasonable that they could make Cine Lenses without making a Cine Camera.

Canon have been making PL mount lenses for years.

Super 16 zooms like the 8-64mm, 7-63mm, 11.5-138mm, 11-165mm.

Also years ago they sold a set of Primes.

Also years ago they sold a set of Primes.

The Canon K35 macro zoom lens (25-120) and K35 primes were in BNCR mount (the Hollywood standard at the time) and were made in about the 1970s.
