Ultra long daytime exposures - 5D mkiii

these have always been some of my favorite types of shots, but i ain't spending 80 bazillion dollars on a square piece of glass from Lee (don't care how good it is).

You could go to harbor freight or some other cheap tool shop ang get a number 14 welders glass.  I was serious when i suggested that may be what was used here.  It is dark enough to allow you to look at the sun, like solar film.  Tbe 14, i believe,is the numberof halves, or stops, of light it cuts out.   Probablyhave to deal with some color cast, and use some gallers tape to hold it to the lens, but it should work. 

Metalized solar filters are also available in sizes thatcan be mounted to lenses, for usually around $90.  They definitely haveacolor cast.

Regarding the formula, you are essentially right.  To figure out the percentage of light a given filter will transmit, use this formula...

Filtered light amount in percent = 100/(2^x)  where x equals the stop number.  The ^ carrot symbolizes a superscript or power of the 2 or 2 to the x power.

Any vibration caused by mirror movement should affect the image minimally, as long as the vibration lasts for <1 second, and the exposure on the order of minutes

+2 - True without question esp. on shots 2 and 3 but shot number 1 appears close to street traffic  (seems apparent) possible more vibrations throughout entire length of exposure.

Ya the thing to worry about a lot more (like you are saying) on these long exposures is wind and tripod shift.

Chris, nice comp, but I'm wondering what you achieved by the long exposure?  Maybe a bit smother water?  I see that it was 8 seconds and ISO 320, f8.  why not push it a bit more, and get a 30sec+ exposure?  you would start to get a lot more cloud movement and a more surreal effect, but maybe that is just my tendency to push things to the limit.  Also the white balance is just a bit off, which tends to be a major problem of dark ND filters.  Always helpful to shoot these in RAW so it's not as much of a problem.

The 8sec exposure  is just the middle of the bracket... (-2 to +2)
The WB maybe a bit off, but for an evening shot I like this warmer look more, after all that was directly before sunset and the orange tone is usually also there in nature.

The effect is btw quite drastic, the lower half of the picture would be a total different look if not using the filter as this is a running river. However I would not want to stack two filters or use much lower f values as I think you lose way too much fine detail. (The detail on this is quite good at original resolution)

Well, it begins tomorrow!  The images you have are already becoming addicting... I only hope to be as successful as you with them...  Getting ready to go buy some welders glass if I have too!

Before I got my 5D3, I played with a 10 stop ND that I used on my old 1000D + 10-22mm.  One of the better results below.  You're right Alex, there does seem to be some sort of increase in DR going on with these images - the one below is straight off the camera.

One thing that would be good to know is: does anyone have any recommendations for a 10 stop ND filter for an 82mm thread, e.g. for the 16-35mm L?  I couldn't seem to find them when I looked a while ago.

Actually I was looking for the same thing and came across the Heliopan ND filters. Seems like B&W doesn't offer ND filters bigger than 77mm.

This is a photo I took looking across the Missouri River onto Nebraska's shores just a few weeks ago. The ice flowing with the river worked great for a long exposure.
