Ultra long daytime exposures - 5D mkiii

Excellent. 90% of my stuf is long exposure between 2-7 minutes but at night.
I think LR must take care of any hot pixels as I never see them shooting RAW.

I tend to get great sharpness from long F8 exposures. Tripod shake should not end a factor IMO.

I have found F22 flaky in comparison.

You could go to harbor freight or some other cheap tool shop ang get a number 14 welders glass.  I was serious when i suggested that may be what was used here.  It is dark enough to allow you to look at the sun, like solar film.  Tbe 14, i believe,is the numberof halves, or stops, of light it cuts out.   Probablyhave to deal with some color cast, and use some gallers tape to hold it to the lens, but it should work. 

Metalized solar filters are also available in sizes thatcan be mounted to lenses, for usually around $90.  They definitely haveacolor cast.

Kodak.  They are kinda hard to find as no one uses them anymore.

Alex, these are AWESOME photos... for your 'first attempts' - absolutely stunning work.

The ultra wide perspective is very cool.   

Very quickly, I did some basic calculations, and realise your 'black glass' is WAY WAY WAYYYYY darker than even 3 x ND8 filters stacked.

I have 1 x ND8 (72mm) filter and a 1 x CPL (72mm) filter - which I sometimes stack.  The ND8 (and if necessary stacked with CPL) helps in some situations eg with waterfalls in broad daylight to get a long exposure... but can't give the effect like you get.

Inspiring work... I really like that the colours and tone of your photos are so 'strong' and yet natural. (I do use HDR on occasion, but very carefully - not to overcook it).

Thanks, I really appreciate it.  Ya the ND scale is non linear so you are correct, I am working with a MUCH darker ND than your stack.

Another new one from the other day.  I bracketed this image before the long exposure, but the DR was so good on the single long exposure that I didn't even need/want to use any of the brackets for the final image.  This is just a converted RAW, pretty much straight from camera...

I'm such a ND noob. With a 9 stop ND400x in daylight shooting landscape at infinity (something I might be shooting at f/16 with no filter) do I just factor the shutter speed by 9 stops and leave the aperture alone?

Yep.  You have to get9 stops somewhere to get the equivalent exposure.  You can do long exposures like those here, or use it to get shallow dof (wide apertures) in bright sun.

I'm probably gonna test black glass soon but my idea is a bit specific so maybe you (OP) can share your experience.

I want to use that technique to shoot empty streets...was there many people coming and going in during shooting? (like stairs and bridge ones).
