Keep 24-105 from BnH 5DIII kit deal and sell 24-70 or do the opposite?

Ok, so this is extremely tempting. I have been meaning to upgrade for sometime but waiting for the right moment (in terms of price) to pull the trigger.

I have the following gears right now:
1) Canon 60D
2) Canon 24-70mm f2.8L (MK I)
3) Canon 50mm f1.8 II
4) Tokina 11-16mm f2.8

I shoot:

1) Landscape, Architecture 2) Portrait, Group Portraits 3) Still-life, 4) Often in low-light situations, often dont have control over lighting situation. 5) Any kind of interesting surface textures for use in 3D Modeling.

So one of the reason I bought 24-70 is the f2.8 aperture in the normal zoom range, since 60Ds ISO performance isn't something to write about. And I avoid going above 400 ISO. I hate the noise. Another reason is the shallow depth of field. Now if jump in on this BnH deal, I have 2 options

Keep 24-70 and sell 24-105 OR
Keep 24-105 and sell off the 24-70.

My question is if I keep, 24-105 I will lose the shallow depth of field that I get from f2.8. How significant is the loss in shallowness from f2.8 to f4. I can try taking shots in f2.8 and f4 with my 24-70 and see the approximate difference, but if any of you out there who had already faced similar situation may be able to shed some light and would be of great help. Also, is 24-105 comparatively sharper across the range? Let's say both lens are calibrated to work with the same body. I am guessing I will bump up the ISO higher if I end up getting the 5DIII to get acceptable shutter speed to freeze subject, plus IS helps.

So there, hope I made sense. Is it better to keep the 24-70 or 24-105 in terms of shallow dof, sharpness. Oh, in the future I know I will get the 70-200 so I am not thinking the reach as a factor that much (even though switching to FF).

OR just wait for another one of those 2700-2800 5DIII body only deal :S ? (bangs head against the wall)!

I'd wait for the a sub 2900 body only deal if you can wait.  If you're happy with your copy of 24-70, keep it and get the 5DIII body only.

The following link has a good discussion on equivalence.  Full frame at f/4 will give a slightly shallower DOF than f/2.8 on the crop body.  Equivalence is one thing, but the advantage of FF is having more flexibility in trading ISO, DOF and shutter speed in combinations that would not be possible on a crop format.

I find IS more useful at longer FLs.  That is not to say that it's not useful for 24-105, but I find myself opting for a larger max aperture over IS most of the time.

24mm on FF is a big step up from 24mm on crop, while 105mm on FF is about equal to 70mm on crop, so whether you want the 24-105 depends on which end of the lens you use more often. On crop I used to just bring the 24-105, on FF I find the 70-200 is contending my 24-105's title of preferred walk-around. Of course, with the extra resolution of the 5DIII you might keep the 24-70 and crop for some extra reach.

But really, FF is a wholly different animal. Buy the kit, try 'em out both. There's no guessing for us which lens you'd like most. I'm keeping my 24-105 for now, but if the 70-200 really does take over top spot, I might trade it in for a 24-70 someday. Then again, the 24-105 is insanely versatile, then again, it doesn't give you the DOF. My bottom line would be: if you can only bring one lens, which one would it be? Again, I still favor the 24-105. For now.

IS is great but I wouldn't factor that in here, unless you do a lot of 1/5s shots. But you wouldn't do that anymore, because you just bought a great 6400 iso camera with very usable 12k8. Only reason to keep the 24-70 in that respect would be for faster AF, your 24-105 will work splendidly long after you can't see diddly squat anymore.

If you're ready to pull the trigger on the body, might as well grab one of the deals - the difference between what they seem to be going for and the BH kit deal is about the full retail price of the 24-105 (the kits don't seem to be discounted quite as much yet). Put your 24-70 on the new body and get used to FF then see if you still want to add or switch lenses.

I am a big fan of the 24-105, and highly recommend it, but your decision there is kind of 50/50.  Body or kit?, I'd go with the best deal you can find, counting on the 24-105 as worth $800 more than body only.

If you end up with both, use both and see which you like.

If you get the body, shoot with you current lens for a while before making any deception.  I think in 6-12 months the 24-70 II may be way more reasonable, and then you'll have to consider that as well!
