I jumped from a 5D classic to the Mark III and I only paid 2750 for it when Adorama had their Ebay weekend blowout.  I'm a very happy Canonista right now.

I'm still glad I picked up my 5DmkII last Christmas at <$2000USD. Almost 8000 clicks since then. :-)

If you're in the market for a FF, jump on this one NOW. The 6D just isn't the same body as the 5DmkII, yet you'll be paying more for it. Get your 5DmkII NOW.
In landscape photography, when you shoot is more important than where.

Gear: Canon 5DmkII, 17-40mm f/4 L, 50mm f/1.4, 70-200mm f/4.

If the kit for 5d3 is at $3750 now, wonder if it will drop to $3499 by Black Friday / Cyber Monday...

How can I sign up the price drop notifications?  I want a 5dm3 and my budget is below $3000.

I'm interested how you get to that conclusion The 5D2 is really good, but the 6D is largely unknown. Have you had chance to play with one?

You can get it for $2800 new from ebay. I personally haven't bought from that seller, but they have a good rating and claim to be an authorized reseller:

According to this site, we're looking at a plastic body, fewer AF points, not weather sealed...With those specs, I think they've successfully Rebelized the xD line.

That's good if they can also Rebelized the prices.  $1.5K or less and no one's going to complain.

According to this site, we're looking at better noise, less banding, more AF points, more sensitive AF points, less weight... but yeah, I can see how all of these are bad :).

I think you both make fair points that basically sum up the divisiveness of the coming camera. Based on your signature line EOBeav, I can see how the 5D2 is great as a landscape camera (ruggedness, resolution, auto-focus less critical). However for many I am sure that low light auto focus improvements must be welcomed. Who knows what the sensor will bring.

Im sure a lot of people are upset with the price drop but if you've turned a profit already for the equipment you've paid for then I don't think it should bother you. At least you have the gear that got the job done. All I can say is that I needed an upgrade from the 20D for my field of work & for the past 6 months, I've gotten the images to wow my clients. Just continue to use what you have to hone your skill :)

and it does help to find someone that works for canon hahaha a buddy of mine works for canon and hooked up the mark iii for 2800 when i got it :) network!

just curious, anyone know how much the 5D2 was eight months after it’s release?

As far as I recall, the 5DII price at launch in 2008 was as follows:

5DII body only - $2700
5DII body and 24-105 lens - $3500

I cannot remember the price several months after launch. However, the price in early to Q3 2011 was as follows:

5DII body only ~ $2200
5DII body and 24-105 lens - $2800

Hope that helps.

Thanks interesting,

5D2
Worst UK Lowest Price:  £2299.99  23/09/2008
approx exchange rate in 2008 2$ - 1£: $4600

Wow some difference to the 5DII body only - $2700 you remember, not ever UK taxes can account for that!

5D3
Worst Lowest Price:  £2999.00  04/03/2012
@ current exchange rate: $4842

Current Lowest Price:  £2399.00  25/10/2012
@ current exchange rate: $3872

Curently $3199 at B&H

Thats only $637 of a ($) difference which will be UK taxes and the current UK price is in line with the initial 5D2 UK price

Now there is a good chance I may have gotten my sums wrong somewhere so appologies if I have but it looks to me like someone leveled the playing field

http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/25/canon-announces-q3-2012-results-operating-profit-drops-by-42-pe/

Will we be seeing further price drops in the near term?

If they are smart... no. What they need to do is free up their design teams to create truly outstanding products, and stop trying to protect divisions from cannibalizing each others sales... so that they can start eating their competitors for lunch. Create a truly advanced product, that isn't intentionally crippled, at a reasonable price, and people will be throwing money at them. Continue to try and protect every product in the stable, at every price point, and you put yourself in the position they are today... overpriced incremental improvements that won't ship in large enough volumes to help the bottom line. Now is the time when Canon needs to start investing heavily in R&D and bleeding edge manufacturing technology to turn their fortunes around (actually they needed to start doing that about 3 years ago). They may have to start partnering with other fab houses in the near term though to keep competitive for the next 4-5 years until they can retool their facilities for state of the art chip manufacturing again. I'm sure they have designs waiting in the wings that would take advantage of current state of the art manufacturing, but I'm pretty sure that management has been reluctant to partner with independent fabs who currently have the technology to implement it, and have been reluctant to update their own fabs out of sheer bloodymindedness and denial about how far behind they were falling.
