So, buying cameras as an investment... how is that working out for all of those that bought the 5D3 already?

So much dumb finger wagging going on in this thread.  Lenses do hold their value shockingly well, as long as you don't drop em, but anyone who looks at a camera body as an investment doesn't understand the used market.  The body is close to disposable it'll depreciate so fast.  And frankly anyone who bought at release and is angry now... that's the price you pay.  I bought at release fully knowing it'd drop within the first year.  I'm betting we all did.  heh  (if not... uh, welcome to earth)

It is a tool.  My tool paid for itself LONG ago, and I wouldn't change a thing.  I'm pretty happy they've come down because I've been itching to pick up another 5D3. I can hardly stand my 5D2's AF system anymore.

Are these prices set by Canon or by the seller, or by "the market"?

IF BY CANON:  I am sure after stock numbers came out, Canon wanted to correct that shortage.  Of the list of things they COULD do, dropping the price of their new releases was probably the easiest.  (Presumably because they were over priced to begin with?)

You have to think they knew before the call they were not going to make the $1 billion mark, so why not raised prices on new releases and crossed their fingers.

Hah, last May I predicted $3,000 by Christmas for the 5d3 at an authorized retailer.

Those waiting for a price drop, this is it...the price won't go much lower for another year.

I disagree, the trajectory points to a more precipitous drop by March to May 2013. The online sales have already hit in that low range...so telling people it will remain at ~3000 for a while is baiting the gullible ...but based on the ongoing price drops, it is clear Canon has seen the light!

We should fully expect this camera to drop to $2750 early next year (latest May, but likely earlier). I will not be at all shocked if additional ~$100 rebate appear in November/December 2013 holiday season to make it a bit sweeter.

It may stay stable at approx., ~$2750  through 2013, provided, we dont' have any more surprises from competitors.

Agree, unless all hell breaks loose around the globe (which it could), I think the price will settle just under 3K for a while.  Next spring, next Christmastime, who knows.

I disagree that buying early and paying more is generally a bad option.  It is a personal choice, which can have a lot of value - either in making money with the camera or for personal use.

If the price is $500 less now after 7 months, was it worth having the camera for $71 a month?  Most that purchased it when first released would say yes.

Agree papa...ive spentb$500 on a lot of stuff over the years that have not given me this level of enjoyment.
