5D III - CF card or speed issue...
« on: October 24, 2012, 03:00:20 PM »
Hi guys,

hope somebody could help me to solve one problem:
When purchased my 5D III I tried in video mode and I could write with 1920 x 30 fp and 1280 x 60 fps accordingly, as it should be. Now I have a headache: I used CF Sandisk 32 with 60 Mb/s and tried to take movie: it was only 1920 x 25 fps and 1280 x 50 fps... Ok, I thought, the speed wasn't enough - and purchased me a Sandisk Pro with 90 Mb/s. Same result...( I have checked then with SDHC card (class 10, the quickest I could find) - still the same. And now I worry, what did I wrong or maybe there is something to do with other settings??? As I mentioned, one time it was ok, but then I tried many times to reach the above "normal" fps - but with no success... Does anybody has any ideas???
Thanks!!!

What mode are you in? If you're in Tv or M, double check your shutter and make sure it's high enough for the 60fps, although it sounds like it should be at least high enough for the 30fps. Have you tried resetting to factory defaults?

Also, you should note that the SD slot is not UHS compatible.  Meaning, you won't be able to approach the write speeds of a UHS SD card when taking video or large still bursts.

I pretty much only use the SD slot as a backup in case my primary CF card fills up and I don't have time to switch to another.

Just put the CF card in the camera, remove the SD.  The numbers for SD card speeds are confusing, they are way slower than what they advertise, because the Camera is not able ti use UHS-1 so they fall back...way back.  The Camera will be held back to the slow SD card speed if its writing to both.

I don't for the life of me understand why Canon designed and released a camera the caliber of the 5D3 without a UHS-1 high speed SD slot.  Totally unacceptable for a camera that will otherwise still be relevant in all other ways for the next 3-5 years.

So you have to wonder, who benefits from this?  CF media?  A small inconvenience to help Canon sell another camera upgrade in the future?  It just doesn't make much sense.  Does Canon really secretly hate SD and thinks that UHS-1 performs so poorly that they don't want people using it when CF already works so well?  Oh, but wait!  The 6D will have a UHS-1 slot.  Hmm.  Will this help give the 6D a little more acceptance for those who can't afford the 5D3?

Oh forget it.  I'm getting a headache.  Where's that liquour cabinet key again?
Yes, but what would  surapon  say ??  :D

My guess is they tacked on the SD card slot onto a slower speed bus since it was cheaper and they could re-use an older slot from another camera. The 1Dx gets 2 CF slots, possibly running 1 off of each DIGIC 5+ chip's high speed storage bus. The 6D would then have 1 high speed storage bus available, and so if they didn't want to offer CF, they would throw UHS-1 on it.

Totally agree, it's really crappy and is a royal pain. Here's the key, get me a brandy, straight up please.

I would of preferred 2 CF cards in the 5DIII, but I guess that's why there's the 1DX.

Its likely just a matter of timing.  You get a product to a certain development stage, and freeze the design.  That means you do not put new technology in beyond that point.  It happens as a part of the design of  all products.  A design freeze happens and then the detailed design proceeds.
