How much will 5D high ISO IQ probably improve 6 years from now?
« on: October 26, 2012, 06:09:02 AM »
Hi all,

I bought my 5D3 by the end of August still at a premium from a reatailer nearby.  While I am using it at every possible high ISO including 51k and 102k for b/w I just like to ask the experts here, what can be expected in high ISO IQ and sensor tech by the time the overnext 5D (whatever it will be called)
hits the shelves?

Is it likely to make ISO 51 k look like today's ISO 12800 or 25600? this would be like one or two stops better high ISOs.

Cheers, Pedro

I really like the 5D3, here's a nightscape at ISO 10.000 (slight NR)

According to the Exif of that photo, you posted the photo before you took it.

Hmmm...so you want us to predict what Canon will do in the next 4-6 years in sensor tech and the various ADC & processing firmware/chips? Ya...good luck with that.

Ok, fine, I'll put what I hope we get in the next 5D/Flagship in 4-6 years. I hope we get better read-outs that will reduce/eliminate the banding we see quite a bit when we have to pump up the exposure, more usable dynamic range, maybe even moving up to 14-16 bit (or have a mode to go to 12-bit readouts for faster FPS?) and better quality at mid-range ISOs. So a somewhat improved 100-400, and improved 1600-3200 (which is the new mid-range ISOs), and hopefully with the better ADCs we'll get improved high & super high ISO performance.

@Daniel Flather: this is a good one! ;-)
@Drizzt321: Thanks. I know it is a difficult question, I just wondered what  might come according to your ideas....
