Still no slo mo for the 5D Mark III ? Yeuck!

I have to admit, I was starting to get excited about the prospect of the 5D Mark III coming out. I've loved my 5D Mark II and had a lot of commissions because of what it can produce.

However, I've always bemoaned the fact that it can't do 60p, at least 1280x720 like its newer little brothers. Looking at the latest rumours, it doesn't appear Canon have addressed videographers who possess an appetite for achieving slower motion footage.

Seeing as though 5D Mark IIs are employed a lot in the music video production industry (where achieving higher frame rates is a must), getting some of their technicians to produce something really cool like 1920x1080p at 60fps (minimum), would give Canon another advantage over competitors instead of concentrating on the multi-megapixel war.

I think if it doesn't at least do that (1920x1080p at 60fps), I'll be sticking with my mark II and maybe buy a 550D for my slo mo work.

I don't think there's been really any solid information at about the 5D3. You're more likely to hear specs about the new Stealth Bomber than the 5D3.

I would think that they would have to at least include 720 60p. There's been such a big request for that. With that said, Canon isn't good at listening to what customers want at all. Look at the Moire.... people have been screaming about that since the 5D2, and 4 cameras later, it's still not fixed.

But yeah... I would say slow motion is a BIG one, along with an improved Codec (4:2:2 hopefully) codec and no Moire = the 3 biggest requests.

That really is not a tall order at all for video, if Canon doesn't at least deliver that, for video, the 5D3 would be a disappointment.

As for using iMovie for Slo-Mo, it's definitely a ghetto solution. It rarely looks good doing slow motion in post. Using Twixtor only work in certain circumstances. We need real slow motion.

Well yes, fine for home movies. But it depends on how you want the footage to look. I've used Twixtor a number of times to achieve some reduction in speed, but even with the best software, you're limited - especially for professional grade footage.

I shoot at 30fps for 25fps output and gives me a nudge of what I need, but it doesn't come close.

If you look closely at high frame rate footage compared to footage shot at normal speed and slowed using Twixtor/Shake, there are noticable differences.

High frame rate footage slowed is far superior and has a 'magic' that software just can't replicate.

The Casio Exilim EX-F1 still remains firmly planted amongst my kit and I refuse to sell it. Despite its introduction in 2008, I've yet to come across another camera that experiments with high frame rates like it can. 2011 and still no camera that produces >60fps for a sub-20K price tag? Massive niche that needs to be filled by some opportunist manufacturer, I think.

If this info is actually true then I'm not that surprised. They could have added 50p/60p to the Mark II but they didn't. They want people to buy the new 7D II, 60D II etc.

I actually think the current 5D2 couldn't have slow motion because it's a Full Frame camera. Slo-mo in Full frame cameras has got to have far more heating issues then when done in a cropped sensor like the 7D since the sensor is almost 2x as big.

With that said, the Digic V needs to be revolutionary since they made everyone wait 4 years for an update. That's a very long time, so they need to at least have slow motion in the 5D3 to satisfy customers. And remember, the 5D3 is Canon premier camera for DSLR Video. It's used a lot right now for video and even some high profile stuff, so Canon needs to hit it out of the park for it to stay at the top.

If they fail to achieve higher frame rate on the Mk III, I wont even consider upgrading... I'd rather go full video and that makes Canon losers.

Things that need to be in the MK III or it's a useless upgrade:

- Weather sealed completely...

- Better AF

- Higher framerate

- Higher resolution for when doing still jobs.

Nice to have:

- Raw video

- Video AF

But I don't expect Canon to cater their customers that much.

I would very much say... that if they don't produce all four of the above, I wont consider upgrading till next model comes along. Screw money makers... I'm not that loyal.

How about waiting for facts instead of complaining about rumors?

As for the 5D3 having less video features than the current crop cameras: I highly doubt it.

The issue with rumors is that are mostly made up by children with nothing better to do.  You can make your own up, and it will be just as good or better than many I've seen.

I understand that most rumours are made up. The trouble is, of all rumours to come out about specs for the next upgrade, not one mentions higher frame rates. You would think -something- about the possibility for higher fps would have leaked by now.

It wouldn't surprise me if this wasn't addressed anyhow. It's as if camera manufacturers rarely consider the need for high fps, as if it were not important.

Can you tell them to invent FPS at 120FPS or greater? Now that really would be cool...
Just imagine:

DIGIC V = 1920x1080p @ 60fps
                 1280x720p @ 120fps

Awesome. I'd order 10 !!

If only Canon would LISTEN to us !!! Higher frame rates, PLEASE!!!!
