for about the same price as Canon's new 35/2? Wow If its any good, that'll be fantastic. Competition is good. USB dock, but no fold out keyboard and monitor?  :o

Maybe a little on the pricey side for a Sigma prime, but the USB port is intriguing. It'd be cool if it solved some of the AF issues without having to send the lens in for service. Is this feature new? Haven't seen it before.

I've been pining for a 35mm prime for a long while now.  The 35L put me off because of cost and bulk.  The old 35/2 just seemed too dated in too many ways.  Now there are two new options: this sigma, and the new EF 35/2 IS.  Similar price - high but doable.  Sigma is significantly bulkier (twice the weight, a bit longer).  Sigma has f/1.4, but Canon has IS.  Tough decision.

I thought the reasons we buy prime lenses: sharp and bigger aperture(faster shutter speed)

"IS"....ummm I'm not sure.

I also buy them for small size.  If I had the option of an IS vs. a cheaper, otherwise identical non-IS lens, I'd go non-IS, but I don't see IS as a negative.

Same here, IQ and small/light. I like both, but I'd probably bring the Canon 35 f/2 IS more often than a bigger bulkier, heavier 35 1.4.

Plus, pair it with the 85 1.8 and you have a very portable useful setup

I bet the USB port was included to reduce the number of warranty service requests.  The Sigma 50mm 1.4 has some of the worst focus shift I have ever seen.

i've been wanting a 35 prime for a while. for me its going to come down to low light performance. i really want to like sigma lenses.. but i've rented the 30mm f1.4 3 times and havent been impressed at all. the lens just cannot focus in low light. if this one is better i'm all for it. i'm curious to see how the canon 35mm f2 performs too.

we'll see when the lenses really come out.

You're probably right about that. Although, technically, the USB dock is not included in the price.

And surely it's there in case Canon (or another manufacturer) decides to modify the upcoming firmware updates or camera bodies so that 3rd party lenses miraculously show strange behaviors :-p

The lens looks really attractive, but if buying 3rd party lenses for Canon - why use Canon at all since they are behind in sensor tech and camera body price? That's what lets me still hope for an updates Canon 50mm prime, though the Sigma 50mm is good and has a good price, too.

Just checked B&H's listing for the new 35/2 IS and the "What's in the Box" list includes "Lens Hood" and "Lens Case."  This is a nice surprise - hope it's not a typo!

I hope 3rd party products like this moderates how Canon prices future lenses like the 35/1.4 II.

IIRC Sigma was reported to be in the process of improving QC of their products. The price increase may be the result of quality improvement.

It'll influence Canon's pricing alright - by making the L glass even more expensive because people are usually thinking "it's mighty expensive, it has to be stellar".

If the new Canon 35/2IS would be a couple of hundred $$$ more expensive they might even sell more, now that the price is comparable to the Sigma 35/1.4 people will actually compare the lenses on equal footing - and the Canon without the red ring might not necessarily come out on top.

Want.

I love my 50mm f/1.4, focuses like a dream, great contrast, sharp everywhere and beautiful out-of-focus.
