Australia: coming lower prices for Canon equipment?
« on: November 13, 2012, 06:55:21 AM »
I don't know what Canon equipment David Jones sells but from this story:

http://www.brw.com.au/p/sections/fyi/david_jones_plays_global_game_f7qnrKLFlwBwILSqlCeXeL

In its “Lower Everyday Prices” program, David Jones has cut prices up to 50 per cent for hundreds of products from brands such as Estee Lauder, Clinique, 7 for all Mankind, marc by marc jacobs, Guess, Scanpan, Canon and Bose.

The price reductions are the result of months of negotiations with international suppliers to bring local prices into line with the global market since the company announced a cost price harmonisation program in March.

... I wonder if those negotiations and price reductions will be seen at other retailers?

"Up to 50% off" on "Canon products" could mean 10% off the X Mark I Calculator Mouse and the Cyan Ink Cartridge for the PIXMA MG3120 only.  ;)

But here's to hope!
EOS 1D X, EOS M, and lots of lenses

"Up to 50% off" generally means the majority of offers are 10% off.... (or less)

Also, David Jones will generally not stock any "interesting" Canon products.

According to The Courier-Mail, you can register here for details - http://www.clickfrenzy.com.au/

DJs occasionally have good specials, but their range is very basic / low end and may not interest most people here.  But there are a couple of hundred larger retailers involved, so will be interesting to watch.  Its good to see local retailers embracing the web rather than complaining about slipping sales and advocating for regulations to hamper imports.  Although I notice Harvey Norman is conspicuously absent from the list of participating retailers.

Myers melbourne CBD has a nikon d3s for ... Wait for it... ... $8500 ROFL

David Jones I would hope wouldn't be that completely stupid. Still it isn't the place you'd usually go if you want pro equipment.

Haha, that Frenzy event doesn't even start for over another three hours, wonder what it will be like when it does start ::).

ETA - I noticed Dick Smith are taking part and sell Canon gear, not high end stuff but they have EOS-M and up to 60D bodies by the look if anyone's after that sort of stuff it might be worth a look.

Maybe I'll tram it up to Bourke street on the way home and have a quick look this evening....

Strange, just as I was reading this post the image disappeared. Seems they've taken it down because the website's back up and running (although it's shiteslow, but then everything from my work today has been).

Finding stuff is another thing. There's no Canon under Home+Leisure->Technology, not under Men, and nothing under Toys either (not even Toys->Educational&Scientific).
Finally I found it by doing a (5 minutes to respond) Brand Search, the only non-P&S they have are 600D kit (18-55 and 55-250) for $900 down from $1150, same TwinKit but with 650D $1300 down from $1500, and same TwinKit again with 1100D $800 down from $1000.
Maybe Maybe they'll have more in-store, but these 'bargains' are not much to write home about...

Now it's started:

Wow, we're pushing all kinds of boundaries!!

This is virtual crowd control in action, we’re waiting to
clear the stampede and hope to be back with you soon.
Enter your email and we'll send you an update as
soon as we are back to normal transmission.

Seriously who sets up this stuff, it'd be the classic use for something like Amazon EC2 where you have a huge peak but only for 24 hours or so.

They seem to be up, at least partially, but the deals look pretty lame.

This is what a search for "Canon" yields:

Yeah managed that page once but gone down again. I wasn't really seeking any photography gear unless something interesting popped up, but thought coming up to Christmas might spot a few general gift ideas. Seems like the "brick & mortar" still have a bit to learn before taking the steam out of the online retailers they perennially complain about.

ETA - Didn't see anything personally I was in the market for, but under Office & School / Office there are a few Dell monitor deals that seem fairly decent.

DJ's are usually 40% more expensive than anyone else to start with, so even with any discount they apply they still wouldn't be competitive enough for me to spend my hard earned there  :-[.

The best offer I've seen recently was from Harvey Norman who were offering the 1100D with 18-55mm kit lens for $388 !! Limited to 1 per customer.

Not bad for an entry level DSLR - my bro took advantage of it and bought one for his daughter for Xmas as she is very keen to take her photography to the next level,
