1DX or 5D Mark III with two lenses

I was under the assumption that excluding the fact that the 1dx can spot meter at the selected AF point, the 5d3 had an identical AF system.  When you say "slightly better AF capability" are you simply refering to the spot metering?

The 1D X uses data from it's 100,000-pixel RGB betering sensor to enhance AF, particularly in AI Servo mode.  That also allows face-tracking with phase detect AF - very useful for sports, and a feature that the 5DIII doesn't have.

Exactly what I was thinking.  My first thought when I re-read that was, oops, a typo.  My second thought was that the typo was leaving out a 't', not mistyping the 'm'.

I have the 5D III and the 50L.  I've never used a 1Dx or the 24mm 1.4L.  However, if you don't need the 10 or 12 FPS the 1DX affords, I think the 5D III would be the camera body to get.  Especially, if you can catch one of those Ebay deals where it's going for $2800 or even less.

As for lens choice, the 50L is not the sharpest at 1.2.  But the only option if you need that aperture.  I recently picked up a 24-70mm f/2.8L II, which has been providing great sharp images.  I sold off a few lenses in my collection to help pay for it and thinking about getting rid of yet another prime.  Only have the 35mm 1.4L and 50mm 1.2L in that zoom range.  I will keep the 85mm 1.2L II, since it is sharp at 1.2L and a great portrait lens on full frame.

Hope this helps some.  I'd give the new 24-70mm version 2 a look.

The 5d mark iii is great, but the 1dx does most things better, as long as you won't miss the 12 fps, get the 5d3 and the lenses, both will really improve your photography, and with all that amazing glass, you can carry two lenses of great caliber. I also know that if you take photography seriously, it is wise to invest in two of the same bodies, you can share equipment, use 1 in case 1 breaks, and, you put a lens on for a particular view, keeping that is vital, so 2 5d3's would be really nice.
Or, as I would do if I had your gear, id by a 300 2.8 is.
