lens scratch - worth to keep or return?
« on: December 01, 2012, 12:50:35 PM »
Hi,
I am evaluating a lens (Zeiss wide angle)canon mount.
Do you thing the swirl scratch is an issue for lens value? it is small enough, to make me believe will never show up in a picture, but at this moment, cannot take a shot with with sun glare, and verify that
Please see pic and comment  - just the scratch, not the dust  :D

and the reference stick is 0.5mm pencil lead
NOTE: the swirl below is just froam cleaning - the scratch is to the right of the red pencil lead

Phil, why would you want to keep it?  Did you pay a low price for it/  A scratch like that is certainly going to push the lens resale value to a very low price.  Unless you got it for $800 or more from the retail price, I'd pass it up. You might ask Zeiss for the price of replacing the front element, but its likely to cost $500, maybe more.

+1.  Agree that it won't affect images, but unless you can say you're going to keep it forever, and/or you're getting an amazing deal, I'd pass...
EOS 1D X, EOS 7D, and lots of lenses

Thanks Neuro and Spokane - this would be a lens I would keep forever, but it's not a discounted price.
It would be in my mind, even If I barely can see it with a loupe  :-\

Thanks
