Canon Announces EF-S 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS II
« on: June 13, 2011, 08:21:41 AM »
Another patent concept becomes reality. Canon officially announced an EF 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS II.  Here’s a link to the previously mentioned patent.

Below is the official press release.

London, UK, 13th June 2011 – Canon today announces the launch of its latest high-quality telephoto zoom lens. The new EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II is a compact and affordable lens, offering powerful telephoto performance combined with high image quality, making it ideal for photographers wanting to get closer to the action.

The versatile new lens enables photographers to shoot a variety of subjects due to its variable focal range. It’s ideal for shooting anything from portraits to longer-distance subjects, such as wildlife, sports, or even features within a landscape – ensuring the moment is always captured in impressive detail.

EF-S 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS II

The EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II will be available separately and also as part of a double lens kit, bundled alongside the recently-announced EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II with EOS 550D, EOS 600D and EOS 60D bodies, providing beginners with a fantastic start to their photography system, all in one box.

Designed and manufactured to exacting standards, the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II reflects Canon’s premium design philosophy, with an enhanced exterior design and a number of premium technologies to ensure leading image quality.

Canon’s four-stop Image Stabilizer (IS) counters image blur during low light and handheld shooting, and the inclusion of an Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) lens element and Canon’s Super Spectra Coatings also ensure beautifully crisp, high contrast and glare-free images. The latest EF-S lens to be added to Canon’s range is ideal for photographers seeking an affordable and versatile lens for general-purpose telephoto photography.

The new EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II will be available from July 2011.

A rather unexiting announcement. My guess is that this is a similar "cost optimized" version, just like the recent move from the 18-55 IS to the Mk.II of said lens. Or has anyone read the patent and can elaborate if there are any optical differences?

It is different from the version 1, who knows how much different.

We were told 3 announcements in 2011, this is #1. #2 and #3 will hopefully be better. :)

Hopefully #2 and #3 are primes or L zooms.

The patent says 55-203... Why do they say its 250mm?

Several patents can be combined for building one lens.

AFAIK the patents are more to cover the design of the optical chain itself, and specific values are less important.  In fact specific values could be an advantage to competitors (or rumor sites).

Must be a cost-effectiveness decision.
The only reason they'd do this is
a) to compete with the 3rd party superzooms with better IQ (i'm looking at you, tamron 18-270 etc).
b) for the people who were going to buy the 55-250 v1 anyway, maybe the v2 is cheaper to make?

I know they've just updated a lot on the very high end (big white primes and the 2-400) and the very low end (18-55 IS ii and now this).

time from 55-250 to 55-250 ii = 4 years.
time from 28 f1.8 = 16+ years
time from 35 f2 = 21+ years and counting.
time until efs 25-35ish f1.4-f2ish = not holding my breath

So how about something for the aps-c prosumer? we can't all afford L-primes, but the IQ of your cheaper and slightly slower versions is just plain squidgy sometimes...
Too much gear, too little space.

First the 18-55mm, now the 55-250mm. Hoping for a new 50mm f/1.4, but alright, the 55-250mm is a great lens for beginners and its quality is surprisingly well for $200.

My guess is that this is a similar "cost optimized" version, just like the recent move from the 18-55 IS to the Mk.II of said lens.

The technical specifications of the two versions are identical, not even a gram difference on the weight.  I believe it's the same lens from an optical standpoint, and the only change is the "enhanced exterior design" - the focal lengths on the zoom ring are printed on black instead of silver, and the font lettering has been changed to match the 18-55mm IS II.  I'm sure that just like the 18-55, this new version has a painted rather than moulded alignment mark, etc.

Given the number of lenses that Canon produces and sells, even a small savings on unit production cost translates to a substantial increase in profit.

What's next?  Well, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that although the 18-135mm IS lens launched with the black background for the zoom ring focal length markings and the new font, the 18-200mm IS superzoom still has the old font and old silver lettering.  Also, Canon points out in their announcement that the 55-250 II will be available as part of a starter kit - and the 18-200 is also available as a kit lens.  So maybe announcement #2 is an EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II.  Woo hoo...  (Or is that, boo hoo?)

Is it normal for Canon to announce just one lens and nothing else?  and if this has the 4 stop IS system in a lens which costs around £200 why does it cost £400 extra to buy the same system in the 70 - 200mm ?

They've announced just one lens several times in the past.

and if this has the 4 stop IS system in a lens which costs around £200 why does it cost £400 extra to buy the same system in the 70 - 200mm ?

Achieving the same 4 stops of stabilization in a lens that has a constant f/4 or f/2.8 aperture requires larger optical elements for the IS system, and larger motors to move them fast enough.

Its beyond me why Canon cannot implement USM in all there new lenses... Not to mention these consumer grade lenses feel really cheap.
