That's a great price. For anyone happy to buy gray, just put Canon EF 50 f/1.4 into a price search engine like http://www.shopbot.com.au or http://www.staticice.com.au (for Australia) and you'll do even better.

Probably. Sounds like that (or f/1.4 IS) is coming in 2013. They are doing the same with the 60D, I've seen a lot of deals for that lately.

I just spent almost that much fixing my old one.  ::)
In landscape photography, when you shoot is more important than where.

Gear: Canon 5DmkII, 17-40mm f/4 L, 50mm f/1.4, 70-200mm f/4.

Friends, quick survey... I *may* have a few bucks to spare, and the 50mm f1.4 sounds interesting! What are your thoughts?

Please consider I'm on crop sensor. Should I go for it? The two extra stops over my 17-55 f2.8 would be nice, but if I have to stop down to f2.8 to get decent results, it may not be worth it... if the AF will fail me within two months, it certainly wont be worth it. On the other hand, I really like the alternative of low light shooting.

The other option is wait 6 months or so (perhaps even more) and get one of the 35mm options that would be a bit more of a 'normal' lens on my T2i (the Sigma 35mm f1.4 appears to be a FANTASTIC lens... everyone is jumping through hoops for it!).

What do you guys think? And if you think anything at all... please write ultra fast as the promo will not last long! :)

Thanks in advance!
Rafa.

Go for it!!!

The Lens is good at 1.4 and becomes great at 1.8. It's a great lens...even on a crop body.

Go for the Sigma 35mm f1.4 on a crop body. But wait a while till the early adopter price drops.

Great value... I can buy it from B&H for $424 New Zealand dollars, including shipping.  That's instead of paying NZ$775 from my local camera shop.  It's really no surprise that NZ businesses are struggling due to Internet shopping...

They're, their, there, it's, its, too, to, than, then, you're, your.  One lens, two lenses, the lens's aperture.

This was the first lens I bought when I bought my 50D four years ago.  This is a GREAT portrait lens on a crop body.  Now that I have a 5dIII it feels a little too wide for portraits but on a crop sensor I felt it was perfect.  I never had any problems with the AF.  I heard if you bump the front element it can get damaged pretty easily, but I just kept a lens hood on it and it was never a problem.  I would totally recommend this lens without hesitation.

I owned a 50mm for a few weeks for my 7D.  I found it too narrow for my shooting, keep in mind I do not shoot portraits though.  I bought a 35mm and loved it, although I still longed for the 24L.  The 35mm seemed even a hint narrow for my liking.

If I were you, I'd wait for the Sigma 35mm to be reviewed.  The easiest way to think about which focal length, is go  shooting with your 17-55 with the zoom ring gaffer-taped at full-zoom.  Then do another shoot with it gaffer-taped at 35mm.

IMO, the 35mm is too narrow for non-portrait / indoor sports purposes on the crop sensor.

My thoughts though are: Are we about to see a 50mm 1.4 replacement?  If so, might it be a 50mm f/2.8 IS?  If it is a 2.8 IS, I don't think it's fast enough for most users of this lens.

I just bought a 6D, and will be in the market for a fast 50 to complement my 35/1.4 and 40/2.8.  Don't know if I should wait or not...

For tht price, it's worth a shot.  The one I tried was soft wide open.  AF accuracy was better with live view wide open than with phase-detect AF.  PDAF became good at f/2 and beyond.  Be forewarned... it's the first step into fast prime disease.
