slim filters necessary for wide angle 17-40? and 24-105 lenses?
« on: December 04, 2012, 10:55:19 AM »
Hello, I may be obtaining these 2 lenses in the next few weeks and had a question about if I need a slim filter for the 17-40 and/or the 24-105.  I prefer B+W filters and have them on most of my lenses.   I presume I need the B+W slim UV filter as an everyday protector for the 17-40?

I'd also probably get the slim cpl

With the 17-40, would I be able to stack the slim cpl on top of the slim uv filter or would I need to remove the uv filter?  just curious.

And is a regular filter on the 24-105 ok?  such as this one?

Thanks in advance!

I have the 24-105 with a B+W MRC 010 UV filter (non-slim version) on it without a problem on my 5DII.  However, when I stacked my B+W circular polarizer on my UV filter, I had significant vignetting on it at 24mm (the vignetting was caused by the black frame of the circular polarizer).

If you're going with B+W, I'd suggest looking at the XS-Pro line.  They aren't that much thicker and you can still use the lens cap.

I have a regular B&W multicoated UV and it shows no noticable increased vignetting on 17-40/1Ds mark III combo. So you should be perfectly fine.  Just take note that if you stack more than one then you will have to get slim filters.

Can't speak to the 17-40mm, but I've tested the 24-105L.

Basically, no extra vignetting with an F-Pro mount, even an F-Pro + XS-Pro is fine (meaning you could stack a slim CPL on an XS-Pro filter).  Very slight (<1/3-stop) increase in optical vignetting with 2 F-Pro mounts, and mechanical vignetting with 2 F-Pro + XS-Pro.  You may or may not be able to stack a standard CPL on an XS-Pro without mechanical vignetting.

Even on the 16-35/2.8L II, an F-Pro UV is ok.

Slim if you want to stack.

I'm using Hoya HMC on all mine, standard thickness, even the 16-35II, and no extra darkening at the corners.  However, if I stack there is.

Its a judgement call... I don't like to stack filters anyway.  Just take one off, put other one on.

If you're using a CP, then you'll need a thin one, as those normally run thicker by design.
