B+W XS Pro MRC UV (010P) NANO Slim filter for my 85L or 135L

Hi,

i need to get a filter for my 85 1.2L and was wondering if this filter will work properly as i had read that these slim filters have a different front trim so that some lens caps dont work and also that you can't fit the lens hood over it.

Has anyone used this filter with the canon 85 1.2L?
Or maybe the 135 2L?

i ask because i can get a good price on this slim filter but i also have the non-slim one too, so i can either use that on the 85 and get the slim for the 135 or just use the slim on the 85 if it is compatible.

anyone have any experience using B+W's slim range?

The XS-Pro is great. Yes, it has front threads so the standard cap can mount (there's a slight gap around the edge, there is one anyway with a regular filter, but a little more with the XS-Pro - not an issue in use).

But...there's no need for a slim mount on the 85L II. You can actually stack two F-Pro filters on the lens with no increase in vignetting, and even a third F-Pro only causes a tiny increase in optical vignetting (less than 1/8-stop).

ah ok, good to know that the standard caps still work.

But what about the hoods? i read that the filter is a bit wider so it may foul some lens hoods from operating correctly?

The reason im asking is because i can actually get the slim for a cheaper price than the standard one, so i was thinking to get the slim if it works well. I know that with these 2 lenses (85/135) vignetting wont be an issue, its purely just a pricing thing of the filters

If the slim can fit on the 85 or 135 whilst still retaining the hood compatibility then thats all i want

I Use That exact slim filter on my 135L. Its great but I tend to stack filters so that's why I bought the slim.

so it doesnt affect the hood at all?

My hood mounts fine on my 135L.

Really? As long as the filter doesn't significantly exceed the outer diameter of the end of the lens, no filter should generally impede the mounting of a lens hood. At least to the best of my knowledge. Perhaps they were referring to something like the Cokin GND filters. That I would expect to interfere with a lens hood.
