Massive Nikon D600+24-85VR Deal - $1996
« on: December 14, 2012, 01:02:32 AM »
Nikon has a massive deal on the D600 (full-frame) with 24-85VR - $1996 now, as of midnight. Most stores are throwing in lots of extras too.

http://www.nikonpricewatch.com/product/04031/Nikon-D600-with-24-85mm-Kit-price.html

Makes the 6D body-only at $2099 look like a complete joke.

Nikon is having a big rebate sale that started today.  Times are tough, and sales are slow. Virtually everyone has the deal, since its Nikon sponsored.
Expect a lot of big deals over the next week or three.

Hmm...hopefully Canon will respond with a deep discount on the 6D or 6D+24-105L.

the lens is garbage, but does the job for web-sized pictures and small prints I suppose, if you don't mind crazy distortion at every focal length. In any case, I'm sure someone would buy the lens for $300-400, and that leaves one with a full frame, 39 AF point, Sony-sensor body for $1600-1700 new. Quite the fantastic deal!

Hopefully Canon does something similar with the 24-105 or when the new 24-70/4 IS is released, or I fear they will lose lots of business to Nikon. Many people buying these "entry-level" cameras won't go past the included lens, and getting it for free is a big bonus.

Sounds like Nikon is getting really desperate ... usually manufacturers don't sell their brand new products at such incredibly low prices ... their sales must be really low. But good times for the buyers.

They must be getting rid of all those dusty-oil-splattered "superior" sensors.

The D800 is also discounted a bit. This isn't "desperate", it's marketing around a certain holiday that is kinda big.

the 6D also comes with a "pro" lens. not a "kit" lens.

Yeah, are we calling Canon "desperate" for selling the T4i for prices that are lower than even what the T3i sells for now? Cause they just had a bundle for $700 that included multiple lenses beyond the kit. That makes the value of the kit like, $500, which is 40% off retail or more.

But it's not desperation; it's smart marketing. Get someone to buy your camera now and they are potentially into your system. They make the money back on lenses and future bodies. Same thing with this D600 deal. If you've got $1500+ tied up in the body, and the lens doesn't make you happy, you're gonna buy something else from then, and at worst Nikon breaks even on the deal.

That is indeed a massive discount, but the D600 does have a massive problem: apparently oil spots will accumulate on the sensor for the first 3000 shots. This according to a post by Nikon Rumors:  http://nikonrumors.com/2012/11/29/the-oil-spots-on-the-nikon-d600-sensor-seems-to-disappear-after-3000-shots.aspx/

To me that is a deal breaker even at this price.

More likely they want to undercut the 6D as much as possible in the holiday rush.  People buying expensive gifts are less likely to know all about the strengths and weaknesses of the 6D and D600, and just notice the price and sales and ask can you take it out of the box and start shooting?  Seems like a good business move for Nikon to get more people onto their system.  Canon is doing much the same with their heavy discounts on the t4i, 60D, ect.

Seems like no more than a minor irritation to me.

You set it on continuous and keep pressing the button while you watch a mindless football game and drink beer. After 3000 or so (clicks or beers, whichever come first), you clean up the sensor and start taking pictures!

So you will spend $2000 for an oily sensor, go to a football game drink beer while taking 3000 photos with your finger on the shutter the whole time (or your thumb on a remote trigger) and then go home and clean the sensor ... EXCELLENT way to spend $2000 on a substandard camera and work to clean it up so it is usable again.
