70-200 f/2.8L IS II Problem
« on: January 21, 2013, 06:17:14 PM »
Hello,

As a long time reader and first time poster, I would like to thank the many who contribute to this forum.  My technical knowledge and applied skills have greatly increased since reading this forum.

Now, I am seeking advice on how to deal with a recent problem that I have encountered.  I purchased a EF 70-200 f/2.8 IS II three weeks ago.  As soon as it arrived, my excitement quickly turned to concern when I noticed something of a blemish on one of the elements (the element just before the front element).  I am not certain as to what it is.  It could be dust or a scratch, but my untrained eye is unable to tell.

What course of action would you recommend?  I have not registered the warranty.  I pondered this and decided to hold off in the event that I should send it back and request a different copy.

Any insight is appreciated.

It will almost certainly have no effect on images. Might affect resale value.  If you can return it to the seller, I'd exchange it...

Did you buy it from a dealer such as amazon or B&H? Or via Ebay used? Like Neuro said Return if you can. Three weeks may be outside the time limit for returns but if you explain your situation I am sure any reputable dealer would listen. If still under warranty Call Canon and ask them. I got a DOA 600 EX-RT and they told me best course of action, Had a working one next day no problem.

Thanks for the replies. I bought it from Amazon on 12/31. While it may not impact image quality, I am concerned about the compromised resale value.

Try to get it exchanged from Amazon first.  It's obviously a defect they may just exchange it for you.  If not, Canon will fix it and ask them to check collimation and AF accuracy while it's there.  It will be better than new.

Return it quickly! Within 30 days Amazon takes anything back, no questions asked. After 30 days you have to make a case for it having a defect or they will only give you 80% of the value on return.

I obviously don't condone using Amazon as a free lens rental service, but their return policy has been great in my experience. I sent back a Manfrotto 055 tripod after deciding it was far too heavy to carry around and they took it back and gave me a full refund without charging me shipping like they said they would. I have also returned several other non-photography-related items and have always gotten a full refund the day they received the item.

Return it.
Be sure they give you a new one, not a refurbished or returned one.

I had also bought this very same lens from Amazon, and had an issue with it < 1 year of having it. Since it was outside the return policy for Amazon, I sent it to Canon, and they got it back to me within 2 weeks. It has worked beautifully ever since. So even if for some reason Amazon won't help you, Canon will. :)

Canon service is pretty awesome.  I'm lucky to live a half mile away from the Canon Service Center in Irvine.
