Not a macro/close-up photo  ;). This one was taken last sunday. The big buggy (hpi-racing, 1m long) was driven by my friend.

Went to the zoo recently with only this lens.   I'm amazed at the detail it maintains even when heavily cropped.  This chap was miles away!  Cropped heavily and then up-scaled slightly in PP.

I just purchased this lens last week and can't believe how sharp it is! What a amazing lens! Here is a picture I took with it last weekend of a painted turtle in a wildlife refuge I was hiking in.

Glad you know your Turtles... for if it were a snapping Turtle, it would have showed your 100mm, how sharp "it" is.  :P

Spring's here - the 100L starts getting more use this time of year for me... (This whole bluebell plant is less than 3 inches [5cm] tall).  This is wide open and handheld

Love the color of the bokeh area in that first photo.  Lovely

I have the non-L 100mm myself, bought many years ago before the 'L' was available. Does anyone who has upgraded from the 'non-L' to the 'L' have a view whether they can see a material difference in image quality? These are some of the flowers in our garden, taken today.

I have used both and own the L, there is zero material difference in image quality, the only way to tell the difference in some images is by the bokeh, it is much smoother with the L due to the different shaped aperture blades. In your images 1 and 3 would look indistinguishable with both lenses, but image 2 would look slightly different in the background.

Unless bokeh is a major concern IQ is not the reason to "upgrade", however the other niceties might be; bokeh, IS, internal focusing (lens stays the same length) (my mistake, they both have internal focusing), weather sealing etc were enough for me to get the L.

I'm pretty sure the non-L focuses internally as well.

I took these recently at the Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia.  They are from the 15' bubble chamber that's on display.

You are correct and I was wrong, I have edited my earlier post.
