Wow. That was quick! If I hadn't already used up my annual end-of-year-buying-expensive-stuff-I-shouldn't money, I'd jump on that

So is this radical price drop just an end of the year special, natural evolution to a more reasonable price, or is Canon going to be releasing a new round of sensors sooner rather than later?

I've had good experience with Canon refurbs, every Canon camera I have owned has come from the refurb store and I've never had any problems with them (knock on wood).

I was thinking of getting a 6D, but for $200 more the 5D3 is a no brainer!

I almost did the same thing but I think i will tempt the fates and see how much the 6D is in the summer. If i could get a refurb for like $1500 ish. I think that is a lot smarter for me and my needs. The 5D3 I love but it is a little too much for me to spend on a hobby.

That's a pretty sweet price, especially if you live in a state that does not charge sales tax.  I got in on the Amazon kit deal from a few days back (which is still running as far as I know) and absolutely love the camera.  The silent shutter mode is simply brilliant.  AF is a clear step up compared to my 7D.  In particular, the 5D3 AF behaves much better with the 24mm f/1.4L II than my 7D.

90 days, but, if you own a $2000+ camera you should be insuring your gear anyway.

Not for a good year or two at least, I'd imagine. You'd need Canon to drop the retail price of the 5D3 to $3000, which would drop the refurb price to $2400ish, and then on top of that you would need Canon to include it in a 20% off sale. So, maybe they do a one day sale next Xmas like this and you get it <$2k, but, it sells out in 10mins like this.

Remember, Canon didn't include the 5D2 in a lot of deals this past year (either excluding it entirely, or making it 10% instead), and that's for a much older camera. Wouldn't be surprised if they do the same with the 5d3 in future 20% deals

Sorry, but when you're buying the equipment that most 5D Mark III's owners are, and like myself, who paid $3499, the differential is meaningless.  $2599 vs $3499?  Who cares?  Not only that, I've been using it since early April and I bought it new, not refurbished.  That's 8 months of use of it.  Do you wait 10 years to buy a car just because the price comes down?  How many people buy a brand new car and then 3 years later, go, "Dang that car company!  That makes me so mad I paid $24,000 instead of $18,000!!"?  This is ridiculous.  Feel bad for hungry children in Africa, not people who paid $900 more for a DSLR in April.

I agree, early adopters are people who are quite fine with paying a premium in order to have the latest gear. It's worth it to them. It's not like Canon dropped the price by $1000 a couple of weeks after the introduction.

Keep in mind that this price is also for a refurb and quite an unusual sale. Most places sell the 5DmkIII new for $3k or more.

I care. And I can't imagine I'm alone on that score.

As I've said here before, there seem to be quite a few people here who value money differently than I do. When the 5D3 first appeared I said I wouldn't pay what they were asking. I suspect quite a few people said the same thing. When the price got to a point where I would pay it, I did.

I can understand you may feel bad about having paid a lot more just a few months ago, but please don't presume that the "differential" is meaningless.
