600mm f/4 II - extra foot?
« on: January 04, 2013, 10:03:11 PM »
Long time reader, first time poster...

I opened up the case of a Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM lens, and found a piece I don't remember from other lenses.  It looks like an extra tripod foot, much shorter than the one attached to the lens.  What is this for?

It's the monopod foot.

Thanks!  Now that I know what it's called, it's much easier to find information.

I didn't realize you needed a different foot for monopods.  The manual says you should not switch foots yourself; it should be done at a Canon service center.

I'm not planning to use the monopod foot, but what if I want to use a third-party foot? RRS, say.  Can I do it myself?  I always have before, but apparently this lens is different.

I put the RRS foot on my 600 II myself, in complete defiance of the instruction booklet.  :o

It's four screws with many threads, you'll feel if it loosens a bit, or if you're concerned, use a little Loctite Blue 242 on the screws (I didn't, no issues to date).

I use the RRS foot with both my gimbal and my monopod tilt head.

Enjoy the new lens!

Thank you, great info.  I've put in the order for the RRS foot.

I hope to shoot some eagles this weekend.  (Er, with the new lens.  Not planning to break federal law or anything.  ;-)

The 600 II includes feet? Not just foot?  Who knew?

If one of you guys owns a camera, why not post a photo.  It's worth 1000 words from what I've been told.

The TDP review of the lens mentions the monopod foot, and even has a nice picture of it...
