Ooh, this thread timing is great. Only today I was wondering what's around in high(er) quality longer range zooms. I had a work trip overseas next week, and was thinking of playing tourist. Now last time I did carry 7D + 70+300L but the size still was a bit much when trying to travel light. And my compact (Sony HX9V) is ok for a pocket camera, but I wanted both more zoom and quality.

Having looked at those raw samples above, I think I'd be happy with those results and accept that tracking AF might not be like a DSLR.

So please explain how that is "outperforming" it?

Canon can only take Images from now.
the SX50 can predict exactly 365 days...  :o

Looks like a nice P&S option to throw in the bag for when everyone asks if I'm bringing my gear to all those silly birthday parties and school events...  :)

so you mean to tell me that 1200mm will get you much closer than 400mm?

It is not as simple as that.  The lens is only a 1200 mm equivalent - it is actually a 215 mm lens with a 12.1 megapixel backlit 1/2.3" sensor. There are always arguments in the Forum whether a crop really does give you extra reach.  For this camera, the 6x crop factor does work.  Until now, the consumer super-zooms haven't been able to beat a conventional DSLR because of poor lens and  tiny sensor, but at extreme focal length, the SX50 can more than hold its own against a popular Canon set up for serious photographers.

Interesting, the SX50 + a speedlite coupled with a Better Beamer could make some awesome images of small birds perched on trees, roof-tops etc

SX50's all in good for stationary objects but what about if it is moving?

i think it is about that simple. you are putting 12mp on that lightshade, and much less with that 5dmk3 combo. how about you frame them the same and get back to us?

Over the past couple of weeks I've been very impressed by how the Panasonic 100-300mm micro 4/3 lens behaves on my Olympus OM-D, though the crop factor there is only x2 (so impressed I'm wondering if there's any point keeping my Sigma 50-500 OS).  But the SX50 is even smaller and lighter and reaches twice as far and your comments/photos plus various reviews I've read make me inclined to give it a try - especially now that it's so inexpensive there's not much to lose in the experiment.

The SX50 looks like a nice P&S option.  I'll recommend to my wife who is looking for a easy to use camera to replace her aging Canon S3-IS.

I wouldn't mind borrowing it on occasion for those really long range shots I can't get with my 70-200 and 2x extender.

I wrote at the beginning that of the thread if you framed them the same then the 5DIII would beat out the SX50. The whole point is that if you are standing 50 metres from a bird then the SX50 gives you much better reach because of its much smaller field of view magnifies the tiny bit at the centre of the frame.

The pricing of these consumer cameras is ridiculous compared with what we pay for pieces of glass. I bought a Kenko DG Pro 1.4xTC from the camera shop in November. They took it back in part exchange for the SX50 and it was half the price of the camera! (The 1.4xTC was bought to extend the 100-400mm, and it was no better than rezzing up 1.4x in PS).

I could not resist buying one couple months ago and yes, it's that good ... providing you've got light and - at long reach - that subjects don't move. First the min aperture at 1200mm is f/6.5, secondly the focus is not that fast and thirdly, well, not that easy to follow anything at 1200mm whatever the equipment used, isn't it.

Nobody says that it would beat the heavy gear at equivalent frame but despite its shortcomings, it's 600 grams of pure fun! Whether of not I lug around my heavy stuff, I now never leave home without it.

Better than a artarded digiscope but about as useful.

If I were to start from scratch I'd buy this and this alone.  ;D

At that weight and at the price I can keep upgrading continuously without any problem

It gets even better - I am in Heathrow airport on my way to Hong Kong with the new camera. Dixons were advertising a £50 cashback, which I did not know about. And so my wife scanned and e-mailed the receipt and I uploaded to the Canon on-line claim form.

Another clever feature of the SX50 is that there is a button on the side that when you press takes the zoom back to wide angle and then restores the zoo and settings  when you stop pressing. So, this makes framing at full zoom easy if you lose the target.

The 4.5 stops IS really works - there is not a hint of camera shake at 1/160 as the effective speed is 1/3500. It seems significantly better than the 4 stop on my f/2.8 300mm II.
