5D3 Volleyball Weekend and General Thoughts
« on: January 13, 2013, 10:27:51 PM »
So where do I start...I have been a longtime photographic amateur and owner of many Canon bodies/lenses.  I have progressed up through 350, 450, 550 APS-C bodies until I finally got a 5D2.  The 5D2 was working fine for indoor kid things like dance, choir and plays.  It even covered soccer good enough.  And then the girl starts playing volleyball.  At that point the AF was done and beyond it's ability.  While I was able to get some good shots I ended up throwing so many away that I started to get mad.

Gym lit soccer is just *terrible*.  The lighting is trash and you really have to pull out the big gun lenses to stop the motion.  I never could see getting a 70-200 f/2.8 and instead went for some primes.  I switch between a 85 f/1.8 and the 135 f/2.0 and work around the court as I can.

After getting fed up with the 5D2 AF I waited until Christmas brought out sales for the 5D3.  I was thinking about the 6D and its "super sensitive" center point but kept thinking that every body I went through was an upgrade, but a minor one at that.  The 5D3 hit a low enough price point and I jumped on it.

I could not be happier.  I had been reading about the AF and all its settings but was not prepared for everything in the menu.  For a novice it's quite complicated...or can be.  I spent a few days getting everything set in C1-3 for a few different setups that I thought might work.  In the end I have gone with case 4, tracking turned down a notch.  I have played with the expanded 4 AF points and pure all points.  They both work well for 12 years olds.  The only time I have OOF shots is because I was not aiming at the right thing.  It's amazing to watch it track a player and just not let go.

But what has really turned me is the low light and metering ability.  I was able to shoot my 70-200 f/4 , 1/640 and let the ISO do as it pleases.  I ended up with shots at 12,800 that look great.  If you have just enough light you can really quit using the heavy 2.8 zooms.  The build quality is also much better and the CF door no longer feels like a toy.  The silent mode is also amazing.  When I go into a church or play I no longer have to feel bad for the family in front of me.  It really is a game changer.  And I sold my 5D2 in just 2 days!

So I had 1 problem.  Out of 2 days I took ~1200 pictures.  Just 1 of them resulted in the mirror seeming to get hung.  The CF light just kept flashing and I saw "err" in the viewfinder.  I either didn't notice or see the error number at the time...I have never seen an error in my cameras before.

These are just the ramblings of a photo idiot.  I don't make a living with a camera, but I feel good for you guys that are shooting a 5D3....it feels special to me.

I'm really glad that you enjoy your 5D Mark III and are really excelling with it.  Keep working at it and I wouldn't put too much stock in the error message.  Sometimes when you're doing rapid fire RAW shots you get weird things that happen if the buffer fills.  I have to disagree about not using f/2.8 zooms.  There are many more reasons to use them instead of the extra stop of light.  For instance, the 70-200 f/2.8L II IS lens focuses way faster in low light than the f/4 verson.  It is also a Group A lens which means on the 1D X for example, you can use all of the dual-cross type AF sensors.  It's also sharper, etc., etc.  This is even more pronounced when talking 300 f/4L vs. 300 f/2.8L.  Even though the f/4L is a great lens, the 2.8 smacks the crap out of the 4 by a relatively large margin.

As for the mirror error it was actually not in rapid fire mode.  I think I was just firing off a single shot and blammo...it just hung.  I had to pull the battery to get it unstuck.

And yeah, I know the 70-200 f/2.8 is a whole nuther class of glass.  And the even bigger primes...  But for a $600 refurb from Adorama the f/4 is quite good.  And a hell of a lot cheaper to boot...  And I have to say I find some sort of inner artist in myself if I force the use of smaller primes.  It makes me think more about how I have to shoot the event.  And I should point out that adorama sent me a brand news lens anyway.  They have done that for the past few refurbs I have bought.

If you want a good "gym" lens, invest in a 135 f/2.  Not big and heavy, yet incredible in a gym on the 5d III.

I have been photographing some volleyball games and 5D Mark III is a HUGE improvement over Mark II for volleyball. I use different focusing methods while shooting volleyball depending what is the target, what is the lens and from what distance I'm shooting. I just love the versatility of 70-200/2.8L IS USM II, which is just an incredible lens. With 2.8 I can use ISO 6400 and 1/1000 and therefore I like to shoot few photos with 135/2L @ 2 or even 85/1.2L @ 1.2 - 2. ISO 6400 is totally fine but of course ISO3200 or less is even better. Another reason is that I like shallow DOF - extremely challenging in sports, but possible to do with Mark III.

Oulu's hall is great place to take photos since I can go pretty much for any angle I want and take photos from there. Of course sometimes that makes me crazy since I have to try to analyse the best place to take photos and that's not always easy. Do I want to capture feelings, powerfull spikes, blocks, nice defences, some player... Anyways imho a good shooting place is the key and it's good if you know the game.

With 5D Mark II I usually had to take focus beforehand and then wait. Now with 5D Mark III I have totally new possibilities. I can watch the game and then shoot when there is something happening. I can shoot libero defending the ball from ground, take a photo right after a block (there is usually 1-2 seconds time, and you can only guess when the spike will be blocked.

Here are some photos of Challenge CUP game ETTA (FIN) vs. Stroitel Minsk (BEL) which was played few months ago in Oulu, Finland.

Men's volleyball...now there is something you don't see too much of down here in the south.

I am stuck watching the girl play club ball in converted warehouses.  This last weekend they had the courts netted off from the parents so I had to sit in one place all day and stick the lens through the net.  The zoom came handy as I was not able to walk around for different angles.  But how b.o.r.i.n.g.
