Big megapixel camera?

I'm wondering when Canon will finaly anounce a big megapixel camera?  Are they waiting to replace the majority of thier key lenses?  I know they have some sensors that are prototypes that are very big.  Any thoughts?

Between prototypes in the wild and establishment of a production model there is the unknown to which only Canon is privy to.

I would say expect it when you see it!

That can be tomorrow, day after, next month or next year and you wouldn't know given Canon is extremely discreet about launching new products.

I doubt that it would be MF. Canon will release a high MP Camera only in direct competition to the d800.

I sure hope that they price the big MP camera is priced in line with the D800.  At $8-10K, it may be worth my while to switch.

High MP camera:  Nikon $6K lower price
200-400 F4:         Nikon $3K lower price though Canon may be a tad lighter and have a built-in 1.4
500/600 F4:         Nikon $3K lower price though Canon is a lighter and perhaps a bit sharper

Save $10-12K on upgrades/new equipment.  That is significant.
The  advantage (availability) of APS-H sensor appears to be gone.

Agreed on no MF - it would require development of a complete system in a very niche market. But I disagree that Canon's big FF will be intended to compete with the D800. I believe Canon are pretty astute with their m r and they know very high MP is a specialist tool - it'll be a top end prof model IMO. The D800 was/is aimed at the consumer market, all be it consumers with deep pockets.

Would a Canon MP camera be aimed at the 1Dx crowd ($8K) or 5D M3 crown ($4K).  Sales would soar with the lower price point.  They could do both - 1D Xs and 5DM3x (or 3D) with the higher priced camera introduced 6 months ahead of the prosumer camera.

I see it as both far-fetched and far off. I myself tired of waiting for a high MP body to complement the 1DX for landscape and architecture work... and got a second hand 1Ds III instead.

We can make up somethinng for you, but there is no secret inside information with a date or even a guarantee that it will happen.  Canon has had high mp prototypes for many years, but they are likely not going to release a bunch of expensive new cameras while the whole industry is tanking.

I kind of doubt that because that is the 5D MIII price range, if they did then they would have to dumb down the features in order to not have the two compete with each other which I don't see Canon doing.  I wouldn't be surprised to see it possibly fall between the 5D MIII and the 1DX with the large MP but the specs of the 5D MIII.

Canon have the same technology in MF. They just abandon it when they get out of the Range-finder camera segment 40 years ago.

I guess Athlon is referring to the S2; a whopping big camera for whopping big money - and that's before you  start on the lenses

Not saying that Canon wouldn't be able to quickly come up with a good MF camera, but they'd have to count on big MF players as well as Leica which is precisely in-between traditional Hasselblads and big Canikon DSLRs.

I'd been wondering after hearing all the news about the new sensor development- given that Canon released both their 1D and 5D full frames fairly recently, will they limit the BIS technology only to the upcoming APS-Cs (and possibly the big MP camera which is for a very niche market) until the 1D/5D renewal cycle or will they release updates to the 1Dx and 5DIII sooner than usual. Opinions?
