« on: February 01, 2013, 02:43:11 PM »
I'm thinking about selling my 24-70 2.8 USM, since i really don't use it any more. i think it's to heavy and i prefer the results i get from my 50mm, 35mm and 85mm lenses. Now i need something more wide.......which to buy : the 24mm 1.4F or the 24mm TS ?

Sorry, my english i'm from perĂº :)

These are really quite different lenses and it depends on what you are interested in photographing.  First, if you find the 24-70/2.8 heavy, then the TS-E 24 II will not be a major improvement.

The TS-E 24 is a tilt shift lens and is specialized for architecture and landscapes.  The 24/1.4 is more specialized for abstract, street scenes, and night shots.  It's really not correct to say one is better than the other.  Which one works better for you depends on what you like to photograph.

Had the same dilemma as you for a long time and in the end went for the 24 TS-E II. After using it for over 6 months I'm going to have to say it's hands down the best investment in photography I've ever made. If you're serious about landscape or architectural work, I think this is without a doubt the lens to get. The image quality is great and the control you get with tilt shift is amazing.

One thing to consider is that in my opinion to get the most out of it you need to use a tripod. I use it exclusively with a tripod. If you don't want to carry a tripod everywhere you go, the 1.4 version might be a better option.

Now, my problem is that because I like it so much I'm now considering also buying the 17 TS-E and after that the 90 TS-E :)

For sample images check http://www.inapoi.ro/.
99% of the wide shots are shot with the 24 TS-E II, the rest with the 35 1.4, and the longer takes with the 70-200 F4.

24mm/3.5 TS

Pro's: Freaking tilt-shift
Con's: Limited aperture, manual focus, priced as much as a 24-70mm/2.8L II

24mm/1.4L

Pro's: Freaking 1.4 aperture
Con's: Less versatile than a zoom

Don't get the tilt-shift unless you have a very specific need for it. It's an extremely expensive niche lens that you really should only use for its tilt-shift feature.

I love the 24/1.4L, but I use it as a prime, mostly for its fast aperture in low light and tight spaces. If I'm in a situation where I need to cover lots of different things at different distances, I'd prefer to use one of the 24mm zooms.

If the tilt-shift is in your price range, you should get the newer 24-70/2.8 ii. If you really wouldn't use a zoom, then the 24/1.4 would complement your current glass nicely, but you should at least consider the new 24-70/2.8 ii, with all the great reviews it's been getting. It's definitely next on my list.

I'd suggest 24L esp for low light work. Good luck

i'm really considering the 24L, but i'll research about the new 24-70mm II. Is there many diferences between the old and the new one?  and also do you know which of the three lenses is the less sharper ?

Thank's a lot to all of you!

-1 ... The 24L TS makes a great 24mm lens even if you don't use the TS features. The performance of this lens is really outstanding ... Learning how to use it to its maximum potential is an altogether different matter.
