Patent for wide angle fluorite concepts

Canon has filed patent for a wide angle fluorite concept. Such a patent could be part of a new ultra-wide zoom lens, perhaps a 14-24 or a replacement to the 16-35. Egami also thinks it’s possible this patent could be for the EF-M mount. It’s an interesting read, even when Google translated. Read the full patent here.

"Flourite" is a branded product. I may hasten to add that it has nothing to do with cameras / lenses -

And many tests has proven that the Sammy is equaly as good as the 14L.. Except for the lack of AF, but who cares? 

Canon, please stop being insane.

This is a patent for an EF-S or EF-M  17-35mm f/2.8-f/4.0 lens

And two 14mm f/2.8 lenses.

The current 14mm f/2.8 I and II is a joke especially with the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 out there which in my experience owning all 3 the Samyang is the winner, and you barley need to focus on such a wide lens anyways.

The 14-24mm f/2.8 is an absolute joke especially compared to the 14-24mm f/2.8 from nikon or if you are willing to sacrifice fov the 17mm TS-E is so much better. I would pick any of those lenses before I went with Canon's one.

Anyways this patent also brings up an interesting idea, a 14-30mm f/2.8-f/4.0 lens. That's something I could get behind.

Samyang SEEMS like a good option for ... 4 times...ok ok....5 times... wait....6 times less $$ .........ha...
it has - I hear -  a bit more distortion, but should be considered...

I DO love my 14L II.. and DEMAND autofocus... in how I use it

but I would agree here that Samyang 14mm is a possible option....

can we please get Canon's head out of the clouds.......soon
we want the products but we cant all drive TestaRosas and Antique Aston Martins ...

So why fool around with a me too lens?

As Sigma already makes a 12-24 zoom (I owned a ver1) it seems to me that Canon could do Nikon one better and make  a 12-24 f4.
My Sigma was sharp in the center at f8 and smaller and sharp-ish at the extreme edges only at f13. I have heard reports that the ver2 is much better.

If Canon did this they would trump Nikon in the UWA zoom range and if we have any justice it would be as sharp as the new 24-70II.
