I heard the mark II pinch caps are just around the corner, and have better sharpness and color.

An the advantage of pinch caps is....?   I've got one with my Tamron lens, and I don't much care for it.

Main advantage is with lenses using larger hoods like with telephoto lenses.  With some Canon lenses, the hood needs to be removed or slid back to access the edges of the cap to remove.  Convenience factor.

Yes. They are the new standard issue, but only for newly released lenses.
