I've shot the 44-2 for a year or so, but recently picked up a 44-4.  Newer design with set clicks for aperture as opposed to the preset design of the 44-2 I have.  The 44-4 seems to have a bit less micro contrast, but on a plus side, it works on my 6D without any mirror hang, even at infinity.

Here's one of my early ones from the 44-2:

Thanks for this thread!  I keep thinking about buying this lens and keep postponing the purchase.  Examples like this are good incentive to just push the buy button.

Cheers!

I paid $26US shipped from Russia from my 44-2.  I paid about $48 for my like new 44-4.  Kind of hard to beat for that price!

ISO 1600, f2, 1/25, Helios 44-2 58mm, handheld with a 40D in the dark

it makes for a fantastic portrait lens on crop bodies

f11 and a few seconds long shutter whilst playing with a led flashlight

in my usual walk around mode of f8 where focusing is dead easy

Here's a wide open Helios 44-4 shot.  I find it has a bit less micro contrast than the 44-2, but also functions perfectly on a full frame body (no mirror hang).

Here's another 44-4 shot, wide open.  The slightly dreamy look suits the lens very well:

Had mine shipped from Ukraine yesterday, should arrive in two weeks. To my surprise I bought the Helios 44M instead of the 44-2.
Forgot I've wishlisted both lenses but when I actually purchased it the other day the 44-2 was gone and I've purchased the 44M straight-ahead forgetting they were different models.  :-\

44M costs a little bit over the 44-2,  but other than that I don't know the difference. Pics on the web doesn't show much difference tbh.

But what can you say guys? I won't be surprised if 44-2 ends up being voted.  ::)

Newbie to Helios

Some questions:

1. what adapter is needed for 60D and 6D?

2. is ebay the source for the lens?

You'll need an M42 adapter for any EOS mount camera. Yes, Ebay is where you can purchase the lens as well as the adapter, although I would recommend purchasing the adapter through Amazon. Per your info, there are various versions of the Helios 44M. I'd recommend the 44M-4 version. If you want the best Helios version with great contrast and better swirly bokeh, I'd recommend purchasing the more expensive 77M versions.

The Helios 44m-2 is quite possible my joint favourite lens - it's just so much fun. It took it out last year (almost a year to the day) to Bath: here is the Royal Crescent taken from hopefully a different viewpoint to that that the majority of tourists take. From memory, I think this was at f/11:

That is a beautiful image.  Great, sharp textures.  One forgets just how sharp the Helios is stopped down because of its artistic, dreamy nature wide open.
