will be interested to see how this lens performs.

Could someone explain this to me:

When I look at the-digital-picture's wide open test chart shots at 200mm, the Tamron seems to beat the Sigma (or at worst, matches it), but then switch to 400mm (slap on a 2x TC) and the Tamron completely falls apart!

Am I mistaken? Did Bryan completely blow focus? What's going on???

From what I understand, Tamron actually strongly recommends AGAINST using this lens with teleconverters (probably for this reason). I must confess that I don't understand why this lens seems so incompatible with teles, considering that it's native resolution matches or even exceeds the Canon MKII at most focal lengths.  This one factor has kind of cooled my desire for the lens.  Otherwise, it looks pretty great.  Very sharp and contrasty, and from what I have seen it produces somewhat smoother bokeh than the MKII as well.  It's AF is bit slower than the Canon.  Still, if the lens was at $1299, I would still look at it long and hard.  I have the 70-300L if I need the extra reach.
