Will Canon release a Pocket BMCC competitor?
« on: April 08, 2013, 11:17:23 PM »
I think it's a amazing that Black Magic released such a camera and I have been looking to upgrade to something that shoots raw for my real estate work. The sensor is s16, but I'm sure I could find an affordable lens to get wide enough. This really sounds perfect for my RE work. I would be happy to pay Canon more for a competitor maybe even with a slightly larger sensor. Body size is not an issue to me for the most part. It's just the specs I want. And SD Cards! Affordable media. Any thoughts on Canon?

Hahaha Canon releasing something other than 8-bit H.264 for less than $20,000 – not a chance.
Think about it – the EOS M is almost $1,000 – A small RAW camera with the Canon label on it would cost at least $3000, and it would still have line-skipping moire.

Great little camera, but S16mm just isn't for me.

Yep, and I honestly don't expect any Canon DSLR to ever shoot in RAW. I doubt Canon sees this as competition to their DSLR or mirrorless lines, seeing as it has a smaller sensor than even some of their P+S's, and it basically doesn't do stills (2mp screen grabs...). It's targeting a very specific niche of people...especially using ProRes and Raw formats.

Gonna be awesome for any pro that has to do nature stuff with long hikes; to be able to shoot in an easily editable fashion with a good crop, that's a strong package. But, way too niche for Canon to jump in until it's a proven market segment

Also, wide enough doesn't really exist as far as I know for S16. You're basically at a 3x crop factor from full-frame. I know a lot of people were struggling to get wide enough with the original BMCC because of it's 2.4x crop factor. I think the Metabones adapter would be almost required for wide stuff

They have made a lot of promises, and for every promise, later a excuse.  I'd take a wait and see approach to see if they can actually produce and support them.  Companies often have a tough time delivering on the hype.

If they don't, or at least allow for higher bit depth codecs, the days of people buying Canon DSLRs for video are soon to be over.

All they have done is provide the best video IQ below $10K for around $3K. The first gen is finally out and shipping in quantity.

I was a Canon apologist for the longest time, but show me ANY Canon Cam that can do this.

No chance with the 5D3, not even on a c300(to be fair, the c300 has big-time advantages, in other areas not emphasized in those shots).

For the past several months people have been saying how wonderful they are based on hype, but BM could not deliver them, just excuses.  Why would we expect that to change?

I am not a Canon apologist as your snide remark suggests, just observing the facts.  There is zero history of ontime deliveries, of customer support, or any of the other critical aspects of the business.

I wish them success, but for someone who is counting on making money with their equipment, its a high risk based on their past performance.

Thats why I suggest a wait and see approach.  Once they are out in significant numbers, issues will be found, thats normal.  Lets see if they fix them, or just wave them off.

What will their turnaround time be for repairs. will they give loaners, its still a unknown.  If that is not important to someone, they are either using it as a hobby, or in a business destined to fail.

I didn't mean to offend. Let me try and remake my point.

The original BMC is now in the hands of many people. It's not without it's flaws, but it is also punching well above its weight (price).

I think people, myself included, are willing to put up with them because of what you get, once the hassle is over.

But i have no faith that they will deliver the BMPC or the Pocket Camera in by July.  They are effectively selling camera options at this point, on things that don't actually exist.

This camera coupled with a Speed Booster would be awesome I think
