how much image difference would this have versus a 70-200 2.8L IS II with a 2x converter? you'd have 140-400 f/5.6 w/IS-

The 400 is sharper, especially in the corners

In addition to the 400 being sharper, as I understand it, the 400 f/5.6 has quite peppy autofocus, which any 70-200 with a 2x TC is very unlikely to have.

But I've never handled either the 400 f/5.6 or the 70-200 IS II, so don't take my word for it....

I've had great results with my 5D3 + 70-200 IS II + 2x III shooting field sports in Servo - f/5.6 was much more limiting, under stadium lighting, than the AF speed.

I disable any non-cross type AF points, though, so I only get the center stack to choose from with this combo. I'm not sure what performance is like when using the left/right outer points.

Thanks, I got one. What a deal. I miss these 1993 lenses and actually sold my last one in fall 2012 for $1,000 on CL. Honestly, I'm not looking forward to the next three days with my 400mm II, and am actually craving to return to these lightweight lenses, which are perfect for outdoor track, as soon as I receive my order.
5DIII, 5DII, 7D x5, 6D, T2i, T3, 1D X, 10-22mm, 16-35mm II, 18-55mm II, 18-135mm IS x2, 70-200mm f/2.8L II, 24mm f/1.4L II, 50mm f/1.4, 50mm 1/1.8 II x2, 85mm f/1.8 x2, 100mm f/2 x2, 135mm f/2L x2, 200mm f/2.8L II x2, 1.4X III, 2.0X II, 60mm f/2.8 Macro, etc. only had room to list a few Canon items

I also disable the non-cross AF points, and especially in daylight, 5D3+70-200II+2xIII combo AF is plenty snappy for me, even in Al servo, plenty sharp too.  Just took this yesterday in Al servo.

I am hoping the Canon 400 f/5.6 being on sale means a new 400 mm is coming "soon."

I think it has been up there for a few weeks now. They did sell out about a week or so ago. I guess they got some more  :D
The price of a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Telephoto Zoom and a Canon EF 2X II Extender is going to be around $2450. Now it's an awesome lens, but that might be more than someone who is looking at 1K currently to spend.

Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM Super Telephoto Lens refurb is about $400 less than a new one with the 15% sale.
From what I understand if you’ve got good sunlight, this is a great choice. It's lighter than the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Telephoto Zoom too, but the zoom can remove the extender and use a 4-stop IS the 400mm does not have and low-light work is also possible.

So it depends what you want to get out of the lens....

Its a good lens for BIF, fast AF and reasonably sharp.  I had one and sold it in favor of the 100-400mmL.  The issue I had was its length, its a great lens for the price.  It is fairly long, and does not fit in a lot of camera bags, while the 100-400mmL is actually shorter when collapsed than a 70-200mmL MK II.  A 70-200 with 2X TC is cumbersome to hold, but can produce excellent images.

I got a copy of that lens back in December (new)... along with a 7D. I am quite impressed with the quality of the build (it survived being yanked off my shoulder by the kids) as well as the image quality. I've attached a shot of an osprey I took last week with it. image is not cropped but has been scaled down

This has been on the Canon site for at least a few days now.  Been hemming and hawing on the purchase as I am also considering the 300 f/4L is.  Not too sure how many Birds In Flight I'd take.

Do you still have the 100-400mmL and/or the 70-200 with 2X TC?

Yes, I have both.  I much prefer to use the 100-400L at 400mm.

Okay, so is it safe to assume that since your still wanting to get the EF 400mm f/5.6L USM Super Telephoto lens that it has some advantages to the other two lenses correct?  Not trying to be funny in asking this question. Just trying to learn more.
