Lens recommendation please
« on: April 19, 2013, 02:22:27 PM »
Hi I have recently upgraded from a 5Dc to a 6D and currently have:

Canon 24-70L Mark 1
Sigma 15 - 30
Canon 40mm

Looking at buying some new lens. Options I'm considering...selling the 24-70 (Great Lens but too heavy with 6D) and buying 85mm 1.8 and 70 - 200 F4L. (Don't have a big budget, hoping to use the money from the 24 - 70 and put something with it)

Mainly shoot portraits and Architecture and will be doing some courses over the next few months so will branch out to street and landscapes etc.

Also considering the 24-105mm in lieu of the above as its lighter

Any thought would be greatly received

Cheers!

Sorry to post twice I had it in the wrong forum

Are you using a strap system with the camera?  If not, could that be a reason why you think the 24-70L is too heavy?  The reason I ask is because the 70-200L f/4 will weigh about the same.

It might make more sense for you to hold onto the 24-70L for now until after you finish your courses.  A longer portrait lens (i.e. 85 f/1.8 or 100 f/2) will serve you well for now and will complement your 24-70.

I find the 24-105 is a great walk around lens.

Large but also very practical to walk around is 70-300L.  Same weight as the 70-f200F4 but extended range.

What do you mean too heavy? As in the combination of the two is too heavy? or the 24-70 is too heavy to balance well with the 6D.

I use my 6D with a 70-200 2.8 IS all the time and its perfectly usable.
If you're worried about balance then get a battery grip and see how that feels.

I find a standard zoom pretty indispensable, but not everybody does.

You have the 40mm pancake, so adding an 85 and 70-200 would be a nice combination - but limits you to 40mm at the wide end.  I frequently use my 24-105mm at 24-35mm for landscapes, so personally, would not be content with this set, but it may work perfectly well for you.

Since your budget is limited, I suggest a 24-105mm which is an excellent value and a very good general purpose lens.  Your 40mm gives you some low light capability and if you can afford a 70-200 f/4 as well, you would be good to go.
