Yawn.   ::)

Except for...

The Canon HF-DC2 High-Power Flash

There've been a few rumors about a new flash coming from Canon.  Just like the 'new cameras in August' turned out to be PowerShots (and not even an S95 replacement, did I mention, yawn?), maybe this is the rumored special and awesome new flash from Canon.  A whopping 30' range.  Wow.  It's even wireless (ok, it's an optical slave, but still...).  Double yawn.
EOS 1D X, EOS M, and lots of lenses

This stuff was announced today, available on Amazon for pre-order with no release date . . .

Can we start a betting pool on how long it takes reviews to start coming in on specs alone?  :D

Seriously, at least they're starting new releases again -- it's not THAT bad.

It may be a yawn for DSLR users, but it is intriguing that Canon are positioning off-camera flash as an option for P&S users.  Yes, I understand most users will just use it for extra flash power, but it has the possibility to be used more creatively as well.  I wonder if it will succeed as a product - most of the target market have probably never heard of the existence of off-camera flash.  I will be intrigued to see whether it really turns out to be usable and whether it sells.

(OK, the HF-DC1 wasn't exactly a killer product, so I wonder if the HF-DC2 will follow in its footsteps.)

..so no replacement for the SX30IS...

It's almsot one year ago now...
No 1080HD, bad burst shooting, bad low low light..
I think is the only one of the "new competitors" that has not improved this features and some others.

I really hoped to see a new bridge SZ.

Really, does anyone reading this forum even care about this point-and-shoot crap? A new RAW-shooting compact with full manual controls would be another story...

Not to be critical of CR, but I suspect there aren't even many readers interested in developments in the Rebel line.
Just saying...

They seriously went from:

500HS - 24-105mm f/2.0-5.8 with Tv, Av, and M
to
510HS - 28-336mm f/3.4-5.9 without Tv, Av, or M

The moms and pops walking into BB will be very impressed by the new and 'improved' 12X zoom (don't get me wrong, I think it's quite impressive they crammed a 12x into a camera that thin).  Sacrificing 1.5 stops and the short end of the zoom - BAD idea.  However, hidden in the unimpressive specs are the facts that this P&S lens contains a UD element and multiple aspericals.
Quote
1 UD lens, 1 double-sided aspherical lens, 1 single-sided aspherical UA lens, 1 light-folding prism
That I find a little impressive.  Anyone know what a 'light-folding' prism is, and how it could be used in this camera?

That a naming problem in US I guess. In Europe this model is called 1100 HS, and replace the 1000 HS that had the same kind of performances:
zoom 10x (36-360 mm f/3.4-5.6)
sensor CMOS BSI 10MP
non tactile screen, 230000 pixels

So in Europe the naming is logical and it is actually a quite interesting upgrade.  ;)

About the light-folding prism: to keep the body as thin as possible, they did not put the sensor in the back of the lens as usually, but on the side below the shutter button. The prism is then trnasmitting the light from the lens to the sensor with an angle of (probably) 90 degrees, just like it happens with the OVF of your reflex camera.
