6d VS 5DIII
« on: June 19, 2013, 10:53:43 AM »
I'm starting my business as a photographer, and i am trying to decide whether to buy the 5dIII or the 6D. it's a ~1,500$ difference..

I currently have:
T1i
50mm 1.4
70-200 IS 4
(and that 18-55 kit lens..)

the T1i will serve as a second/backup body for now..

I'd be shooting mostly events and portraits, newborns, and.. KIDS. Occasional action (beside the action packed kids...).

Have you drawn up a comprehensive business plan? That should help give you an answer in terms of what you can afford and what you may need for the type of clients you'll have in the beginning. Here's a link to the US Small Business Administration's website that provides information on how to draw up a business plan and other things to do to help a small business succeed: http://www.sba.gov/category/navigation-structure/starting-managing-business/starting-business/how-write-business-plan

I would agree with Vivid Color.

At this point, which camera model is the least of your worries.

In the photography business, there is a lot of work that needs to be done, and almost none of it has to do with the actual taking of the pictures.

Good luck with it, but don't get in to debt on the chance that your business will be successful.

As part of structuring your business plan, ask your self this question:

"why would anyone hire ME as their photographer, instead of the hundred (hundreds) of other experienced professional photographers?"

If you, as the business owner can't objectively answer that, how can your potential customers answer it?

Good luck with it.  In my opinion, the last thing I would want to be is a professional photographer.  That's a tough way to make a living and an easy way to ruin a hobby.
I shoot with a Camera Obscura with an optical device attached that refracts and transmits light

I totally agree.

And as a hint, the answer to AP's question will have little, if anything to do with the camera body you choose.

You should start with what you have and then reinvest "profits" for future gear. You have a camera and a lens.
