7D Mark.II delayed again + 1Dx replacement mentioned.

Northlight :
Quote
In an interesting set of information we're told (thanks), that manufacturing issues (yeild was suggested) with the dual pixel design of the APS-C sensor in the 70D have delayed the launch of the 7D mk2 -and- the 750D and 100D replacements.
A higher performance version of the 70D sensor is used for the 7D2, whilst a cheaper version will appear in the 750 and 100D replacement (150D?)
All are dependent on having sufficient volume of sensor chips available at suitable price/performance points.
The information was passed along to several larger (European) dealers querying Canon DSLR camera availability for later this year, especially the holiday season. All three cameras were loosely slated for Q2 release, but are now Q3. There was no news of a 'big megapixel' body only that the replacement of the 1D X was 'on schedule'.

Heared that too. The shop assistants in the professional Canon shop in our county are afraid, that the 7D2 will not appear until 2015. In 2013 the 70D was a little money-spinner in autumn until X-Mas. In 2014 they hope, the 7d2 will be quite a bigger one. In combination with an 100-400mm (or so) lens for sports, action, wildlife....

A local member of our foto-club (who works there) did not deny these concerns (I think he is not allowed to talk about this)

On schedule for 2016, I'm sure.  Just like the 7D, I'm sure the huge firmware update was to delay the launch of the next camera.  Gotta love rumors; I wonder how much (if any) truth there is to this one.

Rumors are fun and the reason we all found this site :).  I'm sure the new 7D II will be awesome but the EOS landscape has changed a lot now that we have the 6D selling at a similar cost to the 7D's introductory price and I wonder what effect that will have on the next model.  Will it be a rugged 70D with higher FPS?  An APS-C 1D X Jr.?  Something else?

The slot is there ready for the new 7D now. IMO it will offer top end controls (now restricted to 1, 5 & 7D models) at a price equal to, or very slightly below the 6D but still twice as expensive as the current 70D, and for that extra money over the 70D you'll get 'high end' controls, slightly faster in speed and AF, and I think it will lose the pop up flash.

But also a different sensor which will eventually filter down the models until it's in the 1800D in five years time. And I guess that's what's holding it up. If dual pixel had been enough of a step forward I think we'd have seen it in a 7DII before filtering down to the xxD line.

Where's the real world weakness of aps against FF ? I find it's the high ISO Performance. From a marketing point of view FF can probably stand on its larger size benefit so Canon could afford to improve aps low light performance without taking too much away from potential new FF sales. How about an aps-c sensor with larger pixels, using the latest tech but still keep a resolution of around 14 to 16 mp.

Or forgot to switch off the time machine...
On the other hand, the 24-70 II still seems to be in use at this time in future, so no hope of 24-70 IS for a while I guess :P

As far back as Autumn / Fall 2012 Chipworks mentioned that Canon who use a 0.5um process for their image sensors had a 0.18um process (utilising lightpipes) which could definately get them to much higher MP sensors and maybe its this that is holding them up. Youve got to believe Canon has shipped a large number of 70d cameras plus the EOS Cinema 300 / 500 etc. can be firmware upgraded to phase detect so I dont think this would be the issue restricting sensor yeald.

Canon know to stay in the race they have to move to 0.18um and with there plans to move into industrial / security they will leverage the change across more fields.

+1 I really like this idea.
The only thing which has kept me from pulling the trigger on a 70D is seeing if the 7D2 will have improved high ISO performance over all the other APS-C sensors Canon's released so far. If the 7D2 can magically narrow the gap between the FF and APS-C low-light performance they'll have a sale here. And if they 7D2 underwhelms, it's more likely I'll be able to pick up the 70D at a lower price in the future (at this pace, we seem to be talking 2015-2016 time frame  :P). But I'm willing to wait as I don't "need" another camera right now.
