What's to be expected from Canon in Q4 2013?
« on: September 17, 2013, 05:25:34 PM »
Hi folks, what do you think? Are there any DSLR or Lens announcements left for this year? Or if not, will 2014 look similar to 2010 with a Rebel and the 7DII instead of a XXD?  ;)

If Canon take too long to announce 7D Mark II, people will buy 70D. I'm just warning you ... ::)

Yes and that's the business strategy... and since the 7D Mark II will be much more expensive than the 70D it might no be the same kind of photographers who will buy it.

The logic of Canon was always launch top models before, and profit greatly from buyers who do not want to wait. In the case of the 70D, the logic is reversed, and some may buy the model theoretically lower because there is no sure 7D mark II is so good it's worth the wait.

Its been unusual for major new products being released in Q4.  However, in Q1 there are typically a lot of new consumer cameras.

Anything can happen, of course, but since the 4th quarter is the end of the Canon Fiscal year, they do not want to hurt sales of existing models by announcing replacements.  Typically, Canon has blow out sales to clear inventory in the 4th quarter and boost the FY bottom line.

Announcements in the 3rd quarter are much more common.

Makes sense to me.  Don't want to hurt Christmas sales.
What I do today is important because I am exchanging a day of my life for it.

what make you think the 7D2 will kick ass?

normally 1 year for entry level, 1.5-2.5 years for mid-range, 1.5-5 years for advanced and professional body.  canon 70d is released with a big improvement on auto-focus in liveview.  and you think that canon 70d does not kick ass?  might be to those who are shooting still like you and i do.  but for those who are shooting video, it does.

can you find me any still camera bodies out there that can beat canon 70d on live view focusing?  there are none as far as i know.  however, as far as for still image, you will not find much of different or gap between 60d, 7d and 70d (note:  canon 70d focusing with viewfinder is also pretty fast though... i had a chance to use it one time during photo summit.)

how will 7d2 be improved from 7d,  i do not know yet .  this camera is designed for sport shooters, so i expect more about focusing and frame rate.  image IQ and low light capabilities (most of the time, about half of a stop to a stop better in each release as far as i know.  as the way i see it, i tend to judge upgrade IQ and low light on RAW file, not JPEG file.) might be not big improvements.

... just my own thoughts

I was thinking about some Sony that have translucent mirrors. Are they faster than 70D? but again different technology though

it might be but i personally do not think so due to number of reviews on continous liveview focusing.  however, it is just a conclusion based on reading test reviews from internet (i.e. youtube).  the draw back is that it has to use STM lens to maximize its capabilities :(

however, from the above given choices, i wish that they are releasing 14-24mm f/2.8...
