40 f2.8 or 50 f1.8. AKA shorty forty and nifty fifty. If it has a nickname it's either cheap and good or expensive and good. See the pattern? ;)

Have fun!

what did you have in mind for a budget?

If you are in the USA, The Canon direct website has refurbished lenses, and has a 15% off sale every few weeks.

The 17-40mm L can often be found used in the $500-600 range, its fairly decent for the price.  For about $700 used, a 24-105mmL is also good.

As noted above, the 40mm f/2.8 is excellent and cheap!

At the lowest end I can recommend is the kit lens, 28-125mm IS found for $200-250 used.  Its OK, but you might soon want more.

With a FF body like the 5D, most budget lenses will provide a good image with excellent resolution.  That's one of the benefits of FF.

"landscape and street shooting"

Depends if you want zooms or not.
I´d say go for 24/ 2.8 IS + 50 /1.4 and 100/2.

Perhaps you need something wider than the 24 but let that wait.
These lenses are supergreat and not too expensive and will make you work for your shots - that is a very good thing. Small primes are less noticeable when doing street photography compared to bigger zooms. You got wide, normal and tele covered. Perfect, and even if you would later get such lenses as 24-70 II and 70-200 II I would say that the kit you start out with would still be valid.

Good luck.

Rokinon / Samyang 14mm f/2.8 manual focus. It's awesome and cheap because manual focus only. There are good reviews on this site and I use one all the time on a full frame camera.

I bring my 28mm F1.8, 50mm F1.8 and sometimes my 100mm F2.8 macro with me.  Out of those 3, my most used lens is the nifty-fifty.  I'm still patiently waiting for the 50mm F1.8 IS.  Until then, I'm much more satisfied with this 50 than the 50mm F1.4.  Anyway, as somebody had said, you can start with the nifty-fifty or the shorty-forty.  They are the best normal lens for general photography using a full frame.  Personally, I like the 50mm focal length more than the 40.  It's up to you though.  Another thing, if you are looking for a 1 lens solution, the 24-105mm seems sensible.

+1 on the EF 24-105 f/4L IS USM. It is excellent for landscape work and surely well suited for street photography. If it must be only one lens, then this is the one to go for.

If it may be two lenses, you might consider the combination of an EF 70-200 f/4L USM and an EF 17-40 f/4L USM. Both are really well priced, I'd nearly call them budget lenses. 200mm comes in very handy for landscape, it doesn't have to be all wide angles only. And 70-200 is very nice for street as well.

40/50mm is a bit too short for street, IMO, the lenses are small, but you have to be so close that you'll be noticed anyway.
5D & EF 8-15, EF 16-35 2.8 II, EF 24 1.4 II, EF 24-70 2.8 II, EF 35 1.4 II, EF 40, MP-E 65 Macro, EF 85 1.2 II, TS-E 90, EF 100 L Macro, EF 70-200 2.8 II

Don't be afraid to go third party. I use a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 on my 5D and get great results. It cost me about $300 used.
