I have a 50mm 1.4, what would be the advantage of the 40mm?  Does it produce better images, or would it just be slightly wider?
Comparing the two lenses in their respective maximum apertures, 40mm pancake has much better picture. But comparing the two in both F2.8 are very sharp and contrasted. I also have the 50mm F1.4 and see no reason for a 40mm, which seems redundant.

Thanks, I think I'll stick with my 50mm as well.

In my opinion the 40 2.8 should not be rated after it's aperture as 2.8 isn't very special for this kind of focal length but it's a perfect lens to have for absolute light weight and small size requirements. Like when I was skiing in early 2013 I almost only carried my 5D3 with the 40 2.8 in my backpack on the hill because it takes no more space than the body itself and delivers an outstanding image quality for its size and price. I admit it looks a bit unmanly though.  ::)

If you're not that into having this for a fun purpose or for when you want the lightest combination possible I would not get it, but it's really worth a try if you do.

This lens is so awesome.  It's really great when you want to have a smaller set up.  I sold my old 35 f2 (not the IS version) and got this lens instead and I am so happy that I did.  I don't know if I just have a good copy or what, but even wide open this thing is really sharp with good contrast and saturation.  If you have any desire to get it, then at $129 you totally should.  Go look at the 40mm gallery in the forum here... some pretty awesome pics.

It also replaced my older non Ring 35 f/2. Better in all aspects.

This is an awesome deal! I got it to go along with the on sale SL1 so I'll always have an SLR with me at all times when I don't want to bring the big cam. :)

Pretty tempting.  But I have no clue how I would use it.  I don't shoot video.  When I bring only one lens I bring either my sigma 35 or canon 2470. Maybe I will come up with an excuse in a few moments. ...haha

6d + 40mm pancake = almost FF mirrorless

I'll trade the pancake for the nifty fifty anyday. Color rendition, contrast, build, size and IQ. Sure it's a STM and it hunts a tiny bit but it's pretty quiet for what you pay for and delivers more keepers, imho than the 1.8. I even like it more than my 50 1.4.

I guess then you can sell your 50 1.4 to get the pancake...

My comments are based on experience with the lens which I've had since it came out. Maybe 2k shots with it. I keep the 50 for my film body.

I just ordered mine and will get it tomorrow with B&H free one day shipping. I am really looking forward to trying it out with video and also indoor stills shooting tomorrow for Christmas eve with my 6D. I will post later how it does. I have to say my wife still has a left over nifty fifty from selling her t3i that is in the closet I forget about. It will be interesting to try out both tomorrow and see what the difference is. I will be shooting video with a Glidecam and a Manfrotto video monopod, and see how both perform.
